This is simply amazing...
I really like how the man is kind of... well, I don't know the word, but I mean to say something along the lines of "not really shaded before inversion", because I like the steps of shading.
I think the colors coming out of the end of the trumpet? Trombone? (I was in orchestra! I'm sorry!) really compliment the rest of the scene, drawing your attention to them. I love how it's a gradual change from red to blue.
I think the inverted colors, plus the black background, really make this an amazing piece, and I'd love to see more of this type, even though you did say it was for a contest.

lol thank you...I played Violin in highschool, but even though I did that, I still have trouble sometimes telling a viola apart, if they're not together, side by side.
I was an orchestra nerd, not a band geek >.>...<.<....

Yup!!! I Added you to my Deviant watch and I'll give you tips here and there!.. Trust me It's tough out there in the art world so I know how it feels!.. I'm actually a 1st year graphic design student and it's disheartening to see the amazing stuff my classmates come up with but my teachers always remind everyone that you can never compare your work to someone else because everyone has a different style and that's what makes it art.. Not to mention chances are that they wish they could work like you do... So chin up and keep up the good work!!

This is a great concept. I love the idea of it. In the most part I love the composition aswell. The smoke on the trumpet and the vectoral swirls are particularly well done. The only thing I personally misunderstand is the inverted aspect of it, what were you achieving to gain from that?

I Inverted the play because since he was a particularly dark man, he blended in too much with the black background and didn't provide enough contrast, so that's why I did that. Thanks for the critique!!

That makes sense. Though perhaps instead of having a black background you could have chosen a soft gradient to fit it. I would have done a proper critique but i have no subscription. hehe.

I like the idea of this.
I would try to play with it a little more. I feel that if the trumpet player is blowing smoke out of his horn when he could be blowing so much more....:-\ (lol)
but I think you could exaggerate more of what is coming out of the horn.
Just play with it a little more and have fun with it.
