Description For those of you not in the know, this is Futura from the Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon from the 80s drawn by .

I think she did an excellent job on the linework, so I took it a step further. She's good for bringing the classics back. This cartoon has a VERY interesting history, so here's a little backstory on why this show exists at all.

In 1975, Filmation, the studio behind the production of the Fat Albert and He-Man cartoons, had a live action series that came on Saturday mornings called, The Ghost Busters. It was a show about a couple of goofy guys and a gorilla, played by F-Troop cast members Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker who ran a ghost hunting business where they zapped a variety of spooks into the afterlife. This sounds strangely familiar, sure. But the show was short lived and moved on to the hereafter.

Cut to 1983, the trade papers were buzzing about a new project from Dan Aykroyd of SNL and Blues Brothers fame. This was the similarly titled soon-to-be mega franchise, Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters had seen a lot of development over the years, with the original premise being guys in riot gear who hunted ghosts through time and space. A far cry from the three scientists who chase ghosts around Manhattan in an old ambulance. Both projects were influenced in a sense by the Bowery Boys comedy, Spook Busters, which was titled Ghost Busters itself originally at one time. Filmation caught hold of this and sued Columbia Pictures for trademark infringement. A deal was made, the settlement being Columbia having to pay for the license to the name, and Filmation getting 1 percent of the movie's profit.

After that, Filmation volunteered to do production work for the cartoon based on the movie, showing there were no hard feelings. Supposedly, there are drafts that Filmation had done that were pitched to Columbia who had turned them down, deciding to use animation services from DiC, the producers of Inspector Gadget. Since the name Ghostbusters was still white hot at the time, Filmation countered with a show of their own, based on their live action show from '75. The premise was the same, but a little different. This show featured the same gorilla, but the sons the original TV Ghost Busters would be the stars of the show. Fighting against a villain named Prime Evil who had a variety of ghouls at his command. Futura here was a Ghostbuster from the future, who came back in time help the new heroes on different missions often. She was pretty hot for weekday afternoon toon.

Anyway, this turn of events prompted the producers of the show based on the movie to re-title their show, "The Real Ghostbusters", even though that wasn't technically true, but they did have popularity on their side. And history was made.

I want to thank again for the lineart, it was fun to color.

That's ironic seeing as she kinda resembles Kylie Griffin of the Extreme Ghostbusters!

Hmm... her face reminds me of a girl I used to be in love with, before she got snatched away by some other schmuck. *sigh* Well, at least unlike her, Futura is willing to show me her feet.

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to see this episode of MovieBob's The Big Picture? [link] I personally wasn't born until 1983 and thus, never knew of the old Ghost Busters until I saw that video.

Yeah, I do believe Lou Scheimer was first but Bill Murry was the one who made the name work. Like the g.i.joe magazine has snake eyes as a ninja and a totally different line of personality attached to the names and for 2 years it had never made a big splash in the world (unlike Superman+Batman who did it under 2 years), but when the cartoon of G.I.JOE came they made the characters work, making Snake Eyes NOT a ninja but a grease monkey, and attached better personalities the all the names. The joe magazine may have came first but it didn't work, it was the CARTOON that showed how to do it.

Same with Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as their magazine was obviously first but they were never outstandingly successful. Then the cartoon came along, SECOND, and decided to make proper changes and now suddenly the idea works better. So first come first serve, but first does not mean BEST.

The first HULK was actually color grey and spoke intellegently, the first Superman couldn't fly, the first Flash was a guy in a tin hat, the first Iron man was a grey bucket, the first Garfield was drawn really ugly, etc.

Props to Filmation for coming up with a cool name, and I tally love FUTURA. She's clearly a comic book character. I would buy a comic book seris of her if she was drawn like this all day. Very very nice pic. I'd like to see more of the same art and color!

I can't believe I actually remember this show from my childhood days. I don't remember Futura, but I do remember the guys and Tracy the Gorilla. Not to mention their car which was generally asleep untill it needed to be used.

Heh, of course I loved drawing this one (a nice obscure char that needed some more fanart...particularly along these lines). But the colors really wowed me...the mix of Futura's own violet skint one with the cool ghostly blues just really gives the pic a unique feeling. A sexy spectral feeling.

Thanks again for coloring it, you did so such a wonderful job. ^^

Can't make this stuff look great without your lines. Great pose, attention to detail, and an overall alluring demeanor helps. Thank you so much again for doing this one, I couldn't have enjoyed coloring a piece more lately.

WICKED!!

Khali showed me the linear a while ago, and I thought it was fantastic. She told me you were probably going to do the colour, and I just knew it was going to turn out insanely awesome -which it obviously did!

such gorgeous colours, and such amazing effects; the ghostly swirls, the veined texture in the background, and that lovely glow -evoking 1980's neon effects, but with a modern digital comic polish. Absolutely lovely.

And I do completely agree with your reply a bit further down the thread. doing some colouration work myself, it really helps to have great lineart to start from. And khali's work is absolutely fantastic in that respect.

HOLY FUCK I LOVE YOUR NOSTALGIA TRIPS!!! I used to watch this show all the time...and at that age was confused about what that show had to do with the other more popular one...convincing myself they were related in some way. Later I found out the real story behind the show and the old live action TV show that inspired it, coupled with that legal battle over the name rights.

But anyway...tangent....I LOVE THIS and always wanted to see her show her feet off in that cartoon

Awesome teamwork!

I loved the show back then, though for a while before I was able to watch the show ... I kept on wandering through the Student Center at Cumberland College and seeing others watch it (I had other things on my mind back then) ... I wondered about a few of the elements about the show. Later when Ink and Paint released the box sets, I was delighted to find out that it was a continuation of the original live action show from the 1970s.

That's a nice bit of trivia that most people don't know about the show. But it does have history. Even though I'm a big fan of the 'Real' Ghostbusters, I know this show still has a footnote in the whole thing.

I couldn't agree more! I love both shows for what they are. Filmation was some of the coolest cartoons in the day with such detailed background and some cool character designs.
