If you see typos, Bite me! I just woke up when I put this together!!

Step by step (sort of) of a piece which I did a year ago.
why it took me so long to put this up, I don't know.

This isn't the process I follow all the time.
I have other methods which are... weird..
or involve parental advisory.

Anyway,
Hope this helps!!

Scarypet! This is an amazing tutorial. Here's what I did so far, using your tutorial as a reference:

great!
hey here's a tip you might want to try out - try to use other hues for making shadows instead of pure black... i often use purple, browns & dark greens for shadows.. try mixing it up a bit!
keep drawing!

Thanks! Will keep that in mind. I am guessing you don't use one darkest hue in the entire drawing (e.g. not all purple shadows)? Does it depend on the color of the light source? (I kinda got that from the tutorial itself lol).

Right now I am in still in step 2 lol.

yeah. sometimes i mix them up. sometimes it depends on the color of the light source, sometimes it's just a darker shade of the objects color itself... and when i feel adventurous, i use a totally random color!

Ah cool! I have another question..what settings do you use for shading? I've heard of people using dodge and multiply and/or dodge/burn tool. Any pointers on this?

ah, well you might have seen my other tutorial too, there is a little explanation of those tools... multiply always darkens the color value, dodge & burn affects the color intensity - lighter or darker respectively. I can't stress this enough - try not to rely on them too much! they are tools for just for enhancing your painting..try to experiment with those tools! that's how i learned!

(in case you haven't seen these)
here's a "simple" painting tutorial which i hope will help -

and this one discusses a little bit about the color dodge & overlay brush setting

Cool! I saved all three tutorials. Here's the finished drawing.

I was using dodge/burn tool in the beginning then later on went to Overlay/Color Dodge. I like the latter technique much better.

Havent delved in to color blocking and changing shading colors yet. Not sure how to start with the color blocking. It seems too advanced for me lol

nice going especially with adding details - i think details almost always do wonders in improving any (character) piece..

don't worry, you'll get there!!!

Thanks! Yeah I enjoyed doing the details. I used to do away from them because of sheer laziness but now I know how satisfying they can be once you see the finished product. I got a new portrait commission coming..maybe I will try color blocking. O_O *reads your tutorial*
