Description Touring northern New South Wales before crossing the border a few days later to do the Asylum 3 shoot, ~kimba8 and I had just exited the thick canopy in Border Ranges National Park. Kim asks to stop the car to take a few shots of some cows on the side of the road.

Near sunset, Kim yells out rainbow (cos I was still sitting in the car)and I have a look out the window and see it. I think cool, so I grabbed the only camera I had handy (a Canon S95 point n shoot) and jump out. Over the next minute some dark clouds quickly rolled overhead and it began to gently rain on us.

Suddenly a once in a lifetime scene develops. The sun behind us is streaming through a hole in the clouds and the entire scene starts to glow. The rainbow then gets brighter and becomes the most intense full (half-circle) rainbow we have ever seen. Not only that but one end was only about 100m away. A second weaker rainbow forms above it.

I frantically tried to catch it with the S95 but soon realized I could only fit about a third of the full scene cos I needed a wide angle. So I snapped this one and a few other shots then went scrambling into the boot of my car for my Canon 5dII and put on my 17-40mm L lens....

Sadly the scene did not last long enough to get a good shot with the 5dII. It only really lasted less than one minute.

Afterwards we drove away in silence, in awe of what we had just experienced (despite missing a good photo!).

Another shot of this scene taken on the 5dII...

Hey! You've found the end of the rainbow, checked for treasure?

yes but unfortunately unless you call cattle dung treasure then it is all disappointment (see the cows in the paddock)

Absolutely gorgeous lighting in this one. "Despite missing a good photo" this one is very well composed and conveys the sense of awe exceptionally well.

I know those once in a life time rainbows to which you are referring to. I experienced a time in eastern Oregon during a storm that only gave a few large drops, but a large amount of lightening, and then 2 rainbows emerged seemingly from a canyon opening high and far away. Still see it vividly 15 years later.

Anyway, very nice shot. I like the brightness of the grass running up the middle to the rainbow, as if there is just too much color in the scene for the camera to sort out.

Love it! I'm a huge fan of scenery shots. Did you find the pot of gold at the end of this rainbow?
