Description

Season: Early Spring

Location: The Empire

Objective: Track a lone wolf trail

Summary:

He could not understand where he was.

It was cold. Parts of his body hurt. His flank felt wet, his face was warm on one side. Someone was speaking. Did he know that voice? He did not think so.

“You’re lucky I know a bit about healing.”

Healing? That would explain the pain. He felt something cold--icy--being pressed against his face, his flank. He flinched away, and a voice chided him, held him still. Be good and listen, mother had always screamed, so he lay very still, as still as he could, until the pressing stopped. It was so cold. A shudder ran through his body, then another. The cold was not subsiding.

He opened his eyes.

A silver she-wolf stood above him, a bundle of herbs clutched carefully in her jaws. His eyes widened. She was so big! She was bigger than the white matriarch of his own home pack. He wanted to submit, to scramble back against the snow and mud, but his foreleg would not respond without crippling pain. His vision went red. A cry of pain burst from his jaws.

The female said something, something soft and gentle--or perhaps he was hearing things. Either way, Avi forced his breathing to calm. He laid his head into the snow, burying the wounded side of his face against the cold white. His eyes opened again. She looked so confused. Where were they? His eyes traveled around the clearing he lay in. Trees bordered it and a cliff rose lengths into the sky above them on one side. There were scuff marks down its side. Had he fallen? That would explain the pain. He grunted and pushed his good foreleg beneath him. He raised his head to the unfamiliar female.

This… felt familiar. This scenario had played out before. He had awoken as if from a dream, but there had existed another voice. That voice was… it was asleep now. He could feel the presence at the back of his mind, but it was not speaking. It was not gone, either. Perhaps he was only awake for a little while, then. Perhaps the other one would take over. It was disorienting. He racked his memory. The last time he had been awake, he had been on the ground, similarly positioned, before a curly furred brown wolf full of rage--Kubo--and a black female--Toril--and how do I know these names?

Perhaps because the other voice does.

He looked up at the she-wolf and lowered his head to the snow, his eyes wide. She was very big, wasn’t she? His lips pulled back fearfully and he pulled his ears and tail close to his skinny body. He opened his jaw to speak, but that hurt too. Reflexively he arced his neck back and licked at the shoulder that hurt the most--the one sticking out at an odd angle.

“Ouch, ow… that… that really hurts,” his voice sounded crackly and dry to his own ears. It was frightening. He curled back. The female was still staring at him. He blinked up at her with wide eyes. “I… hello. Hi. I… I’m sorry, I don’t…” he felt he should know her name, somehow. He shook his muzzle, creating a furrow in the snow. His eyes widened and pupils constricted. “I’m sorry. I don’t remember your name.” The frightened smile spread, friendliness breaking through into the corners and at the crinkles in his eyes. He let his tail thump carefully against the snow, trying to filter the pain out. “I can start. My name’s Avi.”
