Description My first shoot since I got back from south island, I was expecting a good sunset but then those low thick clouds formed on the horizon which usually means the sunset is ruined but eventually the sun shone through giving this streak of really strong orange light.

Hamilton's Gap, Awhitu, Auckland, NZ.

Processing:

I don't have a decent ND Grad filter so all my shots are exposure blends. Basically, for those who don't know, I take two or more exposures (one for the sky, one for the the mid ground, one for the foreground and in this case one for the rocks) using a tripod and manually blended them in Photoshop CS3. This method takes some time to get right and retain quality but if you can't afford an ND Grad and are competent in Photoshop, exposure blends are well worth the time and effort.

Edit: Made it very slightly darker using curves, it makes everything stand out a bit more. Also, the horizon was very slightly un-level so I corrected it after pointed it out.

Perfect shutter speed, perfect

Can't stand it when people use too slow of a shutter speed and it kills all texture in the water.

Nice exposure blending too.

Looks pretty wicked. Love the water motion and splash of color. Noticed you said you darkened while, my monitor is not calibrated, the image is very dark and much detail is lost on the right side. Looks like a crazy place to photograph

Cheers mate! Yeah the right side is a bit too dark but I got it as light as I could without introducing too much noise and I know there isn't much detail in the right of the rocks but at least you can see the outline and it's not the main focus of the image anyway.

this is a great shot my friend packed with atmosphere, i'd be tempted to boost the highlights a little with a curves layer to really make it pop, and i think the horizon is very slightly tilted up to the left.....a stunner nonetheless...

sculpted1 In reply to sassaputzin [2009-02-09 04:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Cheers mate! Never thought I'd get a comment like this from you, now I just need one from alex nail, andy mumford, hougaard and marc adamus and I'll be happy. I tried a curves layer and it only makes the image pop if I darken it, not sure if you had something else in mind? Yeah you are right about the horizon, I did check it but not at 100% so I couldn't see how slight it was, will correct that now.

Thanks muchly It's a toss up between this and 'The Chase Is On' for putting up in the coffee shop, what do you reckon?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MsCrys In reply to sculpted1 [2009-02-07 23:06:58 +0000 UTC]

I love 'em both so it's a hard choice! My hubby likes "The Chase is On" better but there's something about "Deep Breath" that really gets to me so I choose that one.

Really, you can't go wrong either way!

Are you only able to put up one and when does it go up? I have to wait for $ before I can even go book mine. You'll have me beat in no time!

Perhaps you should do a journal entry asking watchers/visitors which one they like better and why. That would definitely help in making such a tough decision.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-07 23:42:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I like both of them about the same, I think 'The Chase Is On' is happier, has a better title and it was taken on the closest beach to the coffee shop (10 mins drive away) but the other one is moodier and taken on a fairly secret beach (30 mins drive) so it has a completely different feel to it.

I'm not sure how many I'm allowed up but when I went in they had heaps of paintings on the walls so I don't think there is enough space for two. It goes up when I get my act together and go to uni to get some prints done then after I get them mounted and print my certificates of authenticity. Book yours? Do you mean the printing or do you have to pay to put them up in the coffee shop?

Yeah I would but I don't have enough watchers, you are usually the only one who answers but I already have your opinion and I thank you for it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MsCrys In reply to sculpted1 [2009-02-08 03:58:18 +0000 UTC]

With putting up the one that's closest to the shop you may have people notice that area and want to buy it simply because they've been there.

As far as I know you don't have to pay. There's 3 shops I've talked to but I haven't gotten enough details yet. I plan on going in with my portfolio once I have the money to get the prints & business cards done. Although I want them on a wrapped canvas which may be more expensive. At most I'd imagine they're take a cut of anything I sell. Otherwise as far as I know it's free.

You're most welcome, glad I could help! So, which one are you leaning towards picking?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-08 05:57:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I was thinking the same and people may buy it because of town spirit.

I only went in one shop but didn't ask if they take a percentage if it sells or how it works because they were too busy but I think it might be free. A portfolio would be a good idea so then they can choose what they want up but I can't afford it. I'm not too keen on canvas, it doesn't show photos off to their best IMO, I dislike the texture. I prefer a matte or semi-matte print that is mounted and then the buyer can choose to buy a frame separately.

What size are your prints going to be and how much will you be asking for them? I'm printing A2 (594mm x 396mm) and thinking about selling at around $215 CA.

MsCrys In reply to sculpted1 [2009-02-09 02:23:11 +0000 UTC]

Your portfolio doesn't have to be anything expensive. Even if you just got 4x6 or 5x7 pictures of your shots, that'd be better than nothing. Then once you're making money you could get bigger, clearer shots for it if you wanted.

I see what you're saying about the canvas and you make a good point.

I honestly haven't gotten that far yet, unfortunately. My big problem right now has been finding a place that will print square shots and on canvas. I thought I found one but it looks as though they closed or moved. I was thinking of getting them online, maybe through Kodak.com or something. That way I can give people the option of cards, sizes and such and have it sent directly to their home. It'd keep it nice and easy at least. Any thoughts on that?

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-09 10:09:12 +0000 UTC]

YYou may be on to something with the portfolio, might see how much it would cost to get 4x6 prints with an ready made album.

I'm gunna try and get my prints done tomorrow but it all depends on whether the print technician is at uni or not. I like your idea of getting them done online and having the different print options and convenience (if you can't find anywhere near you that do them) but personally I like to be 'hands on' when it comes to prints. I have learnt from experience that test strips are a very good idea to check that the colours are right and the noise is low so your not disappointed with the final outcome and don’t waste lots of money but for that you have to be there watching. I’m pretty sure you could trust Kodak to give you decent prints but I don’t know if they would do it on canvas and I’m not sure how large they can go either. Would you just get them printed and sent to you then go somewhere else to get them boxed and stretched then take them into the coffee shops?

I don't know what I'd do actually. I really need to start looking into it more. At this rate you're going to sell 20 prints before I even get mine printed!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-10 06:46:23 +0000 UTC]

I really doubt it, I went up to uni today and they said I'm not allowed to get any prints done until classes start on 2nd march because they don't have health and safety cover so if I get hurt they are liable. Not sure if I can wait 3 weeks, I really wanted to make some money before I start uni so I might try and find somewhere else.

MsCrys In reply to sculpted1 [2009-02-10 06:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Grr, that sucks! Finding a place that does everything I need/want has been my biggest problem so far. But we won't let that stand in the way of our dreams now, will we?! There's got to be another place near you where you can get it done.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-10 07:27:33 +0000 UTC]

There is a place near me that can send my files away to get printed but that is when it gets expensive, about 3 times as much as if I got them done at uni and I won't be able to check any test prints. My only other option is to go up to the city but even that will cost twice as much as uni.

MsCrys In reply to sculpted1 [2009-02-12 03:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Ouch. Have you thought about going through redbubble.com where you can mark up your work however much you like?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sculpted1 In reply to MsCrys [2009-02-12 05:16:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I thought about it but I have seen the kind of photographers on there and I don't think my work will sell when up against their work. I have ordered one print from the expensive place near me, it should be done within 5 working days and if it turns out all right and I sell it I will go back for more, then when I get to 5 prints at a time I get 10% off. Thing is they have put the price up since I asked yesterday and now I can't afford to get it mounted for another couple of weeks.
