Description

I made a simple tutorial of hair/ fur part II. Hope it may help friends here making human hair or animal fur. They are very basic methods and you may need to practice a lot to get the best result. Get to know your clay and tools are the best way to go. Good luck!!

You may take a look a tutorial video I made at:
Youtube Video Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=00ZGr6…
(20 minutes)

Before you work on the clay, grab a pencil and a piece of paper, draw hair lines, keep practicing until you can draw all kinds of the lines properly. Basically, what you draw is what you sculpt. It's the same way you move your fingers and tools.

Now get the tools that you comfortable with, “draw” on the clay. Try short, meddle, long hairs etc, get to know the controlling methods. Get to know well with the clay and your tools! you may try it on any compound and adjust it.

When you can easily work on the clay. Add some gradation and draw on the clay again. Try making small or big wavy levels. Add fine lines in layers, bigger tip tool goes first, sharper tip goes after. Follow along the clay in direction, well, somewhat irregular, according to reasonable hair growth. Brush it with nylon brush and nail polish remover. Do some touchup after brush off the scraps.

You may make it without adding layers of clay. But it would be concave, so make sure you have puff up your sculpture already.

Keep this in mind, no matter how you do it, always start from big portion of hairs first, don't just go right to the detail hair lines. Otherwise you may go back and forth fixing it. When you are done and happy with big portion of hairs, go making the lines, make it like when you are drawing a sketch.  Make more lines and details in deeper areas. Less lines on raised hairs which will make it look shiny in layers.

Great tutorial!  Thank you for sharing!  I'm not really a clay sculptor, but have always wanted to know how to create fur for personal sculpts I want to make of my pets.  This will be very handy

Thanks!! Hope you can try making your pets to start sculpting, perhaps you might be a natural born sculptor!

Thank you!  I'll definitely give it a go.
I was thinking about starting out using sculpey, but there are so many different kinds.  Any recommendations on which would be the best for a beginner?

If you know anything about casting in silicone mold, resin casting. Plastiline, Moster clay (Oil base clay) or new clay like sculpey are ok. These clay you can make more detail and texture. The different is oil base would last in shape, you'd better make casting, Super Sculpey needs to bake to be hard. Premo, Fimo in colors, is good too but a bit like hand craft project to me. I think you can try any of these to start with. The beginner, nothing to loose for trying, right?

Thank you!  Yes, I've used monster clay and casted a few things out of a two part plastic resin. I've seen the colored sculpey, but always thought it was more for craft type things, not really serious sculpting (but what do I know ). I'll keep using my monster clay - I love the texture of it because it doesn't stain or stick to your hands, only downside is you have to mold and cast the sculpt.

Mold and cast the sculpture is much fun to create coloring on resin or other materials. It's fun making sculpture for the lifetime. You may try anything that is interested you!

The darker brown color is oil base clay like Plasteline or Monster clay, light color clay is Super Sculpey.

sculptor101 In reply to lucasmanlucas [2014-06-17 00:32:53 +0000 UTC]

You may have seen the colors of clay, the darker clay is oil base clay. Th clay is commonly used for bust or larger figurine. It requires casting when finished.
The lighter color clay is Super Sculpey, it needs to bake and become harden.
These methods are just an example, you may apply them to other type of clay as well. ^^

Thanks! I know how that feel with a deadline... So much to do but so little time. Especially when you haven't find a way to do in some areas. And there is no undo button in sculpting. ^^

It's the way I found which is pretty useful to smooth out Super Sculpey. To take off the fingerprints and scraps on clay. Please refer to my tools tutorial at: sculptor101.deviantart.com/art… for details.

There are two compounds that I demonstrate in this tutorial. Oil base clay (plastilina clay) and Super Sculpey. One is Hard and the other one is soft. The same way you may use on other compound too.

You are welcome!! ^^
