Description Well...I had posted this with a rant so bitchy I was rather embarrassed and deleted it O.O Long story short, I feel incredibly frustrated with my art and it's been driving me mad. I feel completely stuck and hate everything I produce. So I traced an image. I haven't traced anything in years. I wasn't going to repost it but then Makoes sent a really encouraging note so...here it is. An image I traced. I reintroduced myself to equine anatomy in a new light by following it line for line to better memorize the curves and muscle placements, so hopefully my drawings will not look so wonky and disproportionate. I also think I learned a thing or two about manes and tails - I gotta admit, I am digging the way the hair came out.

I wish I could draw like that, too Owo

When I first started learning horse anatomy a few years back, I would use some stock images and trace over those. I'd change things around like the ears, limb positions, stuff like that. I still use a reference from time to time if I need help getting a particular thing to look right There is nothing wrong with using references, or tracing to try and get the anatomy down (as long as you credit and stuff) xD I never uploaded the ones I practiced on, haha. No style is perfect. It took me a long time to accept mine and to stop nit picking. Its the flaws that make it unique

Tracing is always a good way of helping to improve poses etc. and you'll always learn stuff to help you in other art β™₯

Like Kitty said, your style is so unique and awesome, that it doesn't matter if there are a few 'mistakes'. It makes it yours.
I could pick out your art from anywhere, and I like it, so there >>;
*is amazing at speeches and compliments*

But there's also nothing wrong with tracing, it's a training tool, and as long as it's credited correctly, there is no problem with it at all. If it helps, do it!

Awe, thank you so much!!! <333 The support means a lot - I suppose all artists go through similar feelings towards their art

-whispers-
I'd like my art to look like yours. I know you're all frustrated about anatomy and stuff, but some of the anatomical "mistakes" you make are what makes your stuff awesome. Just saying- it doesn't have to be anatomically correct to be amazing or inspiring. <3

If I were you I would focus on the eyes more They are more like a ball in a triangle than oval like the human eye! Otherwise this one looks really natural, even if you trace it can look horrible so I think you did a great jobΒ Β

I think I watched 10-20 tutorials if not more before I got the hang of how it was built so I understand you xD Just keep practicing! And btw, your art is not bad at all! It seems like you know how to do it, you just need some more practice, like everyone else

This looks amazing though. Tracing is how most artists has learned anatomy of anything really and there's no reason why you should be ashamed of it. I for one liked your style as it was unique. I think that you want to continue practice (we all need to :3) is fantastic. You just keep going forward and you will be happy with your art.

The thing about tracing is stupid if you ask me. All artists has done it at some point, it's just ridiculous you can't be honest about it withou being attack by a horde of artists who'll then bully you out of an art community. So kuddos on you for being honest and trying to do what feels right for you. Don't ever let anyone or even yourself stop you from moving forward because you can and you will be good at it

The only way you can improve is if you really take a new approach with your art. Β Both of those comments above me have really good links.

I traced for Many, many years and I still do if i find out I'm having a hard time with a certain pose. You're never gonna just be able to sit down and make a masterpiece in 10 minutes but that doesn't mean you should give up, it just means you should work harder at it. Doing what you love takes time and dedication much like everything else in life. There is no such thing as "natural talent" despite what people tell you, and every one of the "Great" artists (Michelangelo, Da vinci, etc) had to work years and years to get to where they were. If you really wanna know something a lot of famous artist has their own variant ofΒ Good Artist's Copy, Great Artist's Steal

I personally have no issue with people that trace. I've done it and still on occasion do it (especially for parts that just REFUSE to look right). There's a massive taboo in regards to tracing that just shouldn't exist, though I think it stems from the situations where people do trace and then claim they didn't. If you're siting your references or source material and you're enjoying art more; what the hell does it matter if you traced it or not?

I think this looks wonderful; yes, you can see that there's a clear difference between your non-traced art and this one but the important thing is how YOU feel. The face still has your style in it so it's not a carbon-copy. I like it and I think I'll love it once you've coloured it in and made it YOURS.

Makoes was right to encourage you to post it.Β

Also, did you ever see this:Β Tracing: The root of all evil...sometimes Β after reading it, I felt much better about my own choices as an artist/creator maybe you will too
