AND THE FUTURITY CHAMPIONSHIP POSTING BEGINS 8)
Working my ass off to get all three kids across the line and finishing the event. But I'm really glad this boy made it. His future rather hangs in the balance with the results (or at least his breeding ability does).

Greg had been roped into the whole event thanks to Ryan. The man had been his long time coach and while he had been really enjoying helping out with the training of the young horses, he had not quite expected to be riding in the cross country phase. Dammit Ryan, he was a Show Jumper not an Eventer! But he had agreed, and thankfully the course was a baby one with small jumps and what was basically a quick trail ride between each effort. Ryan had been very clear not to push it, and to just take it slow and set Kurlie up for each one as nicely as possible. He probably could have trotted the whole round within the time limit so there was no point in rushing and getting faults for a refusal if the horse felt too pressured.
Luckily, or unluckily depending on who you asked, Kurlie was NOT feeling at all worried. The painted colt had taken to the discipline like a duck to water and was happily snorting and dancing away as they warmed up and waited for their turn. Greg was thankful he had been familiar with the colts training and knew him well. The high spirits were not showing in nerves like some of the other youngsters around them, but instead Kurlie wanted to look at everything. Greg hoped he would not try reproduce that on the course. Awareness was great, but he didn't want a horse that fixated on the jumps over everything else.
The clerk called them up and Greg focused on the start routine Ryan had talked him through. Pointing the colt backwards until the bell and then exiting the box at a steady trot rather than bolting away. Feeling much more confident about his control he focused on the first jump. It was a small log but he took care to let the horse prepare for it early. The colt put in an eager if slightly larger than needed jump, and Greg let him canter out of it. They had a bit of ground until the next jump and he was keen to let the youngster stretch his legs after being so careful. Hopefully that care would last through the remainder of the ride.
Hopefully....
