Description

This one was done for a request i go on my previous mini tute. This one is a little more in depth with a few things i notice that happen a lot in the equine community. Eyes are pretty simple once you get a feel for how they are shaped. They offer a lot of potential for added emotion and expression, especially in horses who's faces are far less mobile than humans.

I apologize for my messy and often illegible hand writing, if you don't understand anything, as always please ask.Β

There are a lot of great tute's on DA and pretty much everywhere, but my best advice is to grab a bunch of refs and get drawing. Watch videos/study live horses to see how the eye moves. What points remain fixed, and what areas flex and twist.Β

Hope this helps even just one person, I am hoping to get another done on chins as that was requested too, but with my to do list, that might take a little while.

Lovely, thank you for sharing! I always have troubles with doing realistic eyes - definitely going to try this out!

Cool! Somewhat similar to what I end up doing, but sometimes I just get lost XD

Yea its not a very complicated method. My main issue with some of the tutes around was that a lot had round pupils and then some of the shading ones were very confusing too.

Yea, I hate the circular pupils. I've seen even experienced artist do that. I think it derived from some cartoony styles.

The shading in tutorial can be tricky, I'm kind of a believer in photo study for self learning.

Yea, granted when its dark they can round out a bit, but i was always thinking of them as rounded rectangles. I think the whites of the eye are the furthest i will go towards cartoony styles, that helps add expression and direction without detracting too much from realism..Β

Yea, honestly as much as looking at tutorials helps to get you thinking about different approaches, nothing can take the place of looking at the real thing, either in person or through photos and videos.Β

Yea, but I think they still keep that relatively oblong shape.Β

The whites do show a lot in real life though, especially in horses like appaloosas. Actually, it's kind funny, my Donkey who is a spotted donkey has half white over each eye and since donkey's don't get blue eyes everything but the brown and pupil is pure white on the eye so she looks like she's shocked 24-7 XD

And Yes, I agree

Yea, they are never circles, or even never very oval shaped. square-ish ends are the key!

Yea, and when horses are startled or horses with that white sclera its often rather good at adding more expression. Its a fun little thing that in art makes it easier to allow horses more active expression with such immovable heads XD Β Your donkey is just adorable, with the white it does tend to lent towards that startled expression. Β P.s. i am so glad to hear your boy is doing a bit better. I need to comment on the journal but i was very please that the swelling is down a bit and hopefully stall rest will help with his leg!

It is, I agree. I love those little details, they make everything all the more believable.

I love my little donkey! not many people think she's as cute as I do, They see her eyes and get freaked out.Β

And thank you! He's is doing a bit better, but I can see the anxiousness form being closed in starting to show. We are working on getting him a radio to listen to and fixing the back half door so it can stay open (we originally made it when we just had my Mini horse, so the door is really low, for her to put her head over, but now with him there we usually just keep it closed since they can walk in and out, but now that he's closed in he needs it open and he can reach right down and flip up the latch like nothing and let himself out...) so we have to put an extra board up for him. But other than that's he's doing good letting me change his bandaged daily!
