Graphite Pencil

Look at me with my creative titles! woopwoopwoopwoop *scuttles*

This is the final version of a drawing my Grandmother requested. She is giving it to her friends daughter who loves horses and asked for a black and white drawing of a horse in motion. I was left to decide the breed/build and exactly the composition but after struggling to start and figure out what on earth to draw i found an old image in my misc horses folder.

It ended up taking longer and was far more detailed than intended but it has been an amazing learning image and has boosted my confidence with graphite pencils heaps. Its always great to go back to my traditional drawing and test myself and i honestly believe this is my best drawing yet.

The walk through of my process making this can be found here:

And i want to thank everyone for their encouragement while i did so.

Please excuse the watermark. I tried to make it as non-intrusive as possible but i have had a lot of images stolen and posted elsewhere recently and this one is special to me!

Wow, this looks phenomenal! The more I look, the more wonderful details I find, like the tendons in the foreleg, the depth on his forehead, the perfect mane texture, the sheen on the humerus...wow, you have such a perceptive eye and impressive patience to render everything so perfectly! I also agree with what everyone is saying about how well the dirt turned out too!

Thanks so much Copper! It was such a fun and challenging project to do and i learnt so much during it. The shading was very interesting to try and get right and the highlights especially were a challenge to keep clean and clear. I think if i had to choose my favourite parts it would be the shoulder muscles, the neck wrinkles and the shading/light under the stomach and on the flank.

It really was great fun and it has been much loved in its new home so it was a very rewarding project!

thanks! The dust was actually one of the scariest parts but also one of the easiest... i normally struggle with sand, especially the moving sand but this one just seemed to click.

I love how it turned out! I just really love the mane/tail as much as the rest

.....Makes me want to do a serious pencil piece.... What kind of pencils do you use? or how many weights? out of curiosity

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sealle In reply to SammySundog [2013-12-21 11:27:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Jechoe!  Manes/tails and heads are my favourite parts to draw. they are just so much fun.

YOU SHOULD DO ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! If i remember correctly they are Derwent's. For this one i started of using a H for the sketch and then from a B to 2B for basic shading. I used a 4B for really darkening the the shadows and working in the blacks, but i didnt go any looser as i am rather messy and i find the heavier weights tend to get smeared on everything. XD Even the 4B smeared a bit around the head, so thank goodness for fixative!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SammySundog In reply to sealle [2013-12-21 23:26:10 +0000 UTC]

haha, no prob

and yea, I am not the best at shading.. I try but I just am kind of a liner either way, I have some somewhat decent pencils in those weights, so maybe i'll try to mix it up.. I usually stay harder, never really gone into the B weights.

But between this and a  few other i have seen working in pencil, I have been inspired to try a few things- I did a quick fun pencil project today I'm probably gonna upload today or tomorrow... but I wasn't brave enough to shade. Maybe I'll screw with it on Photoshop.

Thanks for the info though

sealle In reply to SammySundog [2014-01-04 05:46:54 +0000 UTC]

Lining is my favourite part. The best way i get around shading/colouring in pencils is doing it as hatches and thinking of it as defining negative lines/highlights

I am so excited to see what you come up with, i have found it to be really relaxing and a great learning curve to push myself doing something different!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SammySundog In reply to sealle [2014-01-04 18:11:41 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I agree, Lining is my fav too - My most comfortable Medium is pen & ink so I tend to fall back on that technique no matter what I am working in.

I have since been working with pencil more, I've barely uploaded half of what I've done. (though most is sketchy, so doubt I will ever upload it all).

I have been searching for something really different to get that 'learning curve' and make it a challenge for myself... I have a couple of pounds of earthen clay that I harvested myself a couple of month ago and it's been maturing, so I think I'll come up with something to do with that... like a sculpture or something, but I don't know what the subject should be... maybe a buffalo or elk or something

sealle In reply to SammySundog [2014-01-05 01:55:11 +0000 UTC]

Oooo i ADORE ink! though i think my absolute favourite is charcoal... i like the mess

I would love to see what you have been doing. If you ever decide to do a sketch dump of all the sketches i am sure everyone (and even just me) would love it!

I think a sculpture would be amazing! I think something big and muscly would look amazing, though i am just projecting your drawing style on a sculpture. A Buffalo or Bison or Elk or Moose would be amazing! If you decide to do it i would love to see WIP's of it. I am not to confident with sculpture so i find it really interesting to see how people do it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SammySundog In reply to sealle [2014-01-05 16:51:47 +0000 UTC]

haha, I could never get the hang of Charcoal... I don't know why. Though I never spent to much time on it.

Yea, I could do a sketch dump... I have uploaded a few sketches on their own since there are just those few that turn out so perfect you can't ruin them by finishing them

If you wanna check 'em out, I'd love to get some more opinions - fav.me/d70ph0s or fav.me/d70e2i1 or fav.me/d6zdsec , those are pretty much just unfinished sketches.... I have a more finished pencil piece here though: fav.me/d6yw6q3

But I've never actually sculpted much before... maybe a little in high school art class, but that was for a project and was going to be put in the kiln to bake then again toe glaze; this clay I have can't be cooked since it's untested natural clay, so I think I'll have to use some sort of wire framing stuff.. even though I've never done that before.

I think I'll end up with a buffalo.. since they're my #1 fav animal.
