Heck, when he had to *spoiler waring* Ellen, I actually felt bad for Saul. That the writers could make me sympathize for a character I despised, I was really impressed with that.

I think that, and the transformation he went through from the beginning of the series to the end, ended up making him one of the most human characters (with human failings) on the show.
He certainly drank his emotions that way, at any rate.

4th Season is climactic. It will help that you won't have to wait a year between Episode 10 & 11.
