HISTORY
Around 2000 B.C. many Eurasian tribes moved westward into Scandinavia.

Around 1000 B.C. descendants of these tribes began migrating again.
Over a thousand year period, (1000 B.C.- 1 A.D.) they split into three major groups:
The North Germani,The East Germani, and the West Germani

The North Germani remained in Scandinavia and became the ancestors of the Vikings.
The East Germani settled in Poland and became the ancestors of the Goths and Vandals.
The West Germani settled in Germany by the Rhine and Danube Rivers around 500 B.C.

In time the West Germani tribes were collectively called Germani and their territory
Germania.
The Roman Empire tried to conquer Germania, several times, but were unsuccessful.

During the 3rd century A.D. many different West Germani tribes emerged:
The Alemanni, Angles, Franks and Saxons.

Around 260 A.D. Germanic tribes broke into Roman-controlled lands.

During the 4th century Germanic tribes moved further south-west.

By the 5th century the Roman Empire had collapsed and Germanic tribes
took over its former territory.

The Vandals conquered North Africa
The Ostrogoths and Lombards conquered Italy
The Visigoths conquered Spain and parts of France
The Franks and Burgundi conquered most of France
The Angles, Saxons and Jutes conquered England

From the 5th century through the 751 the Franks established the Merovingian Dynasty
The Merovingians came to dominate France and Germany.

In 800 A.D. the Frankish king Charlemagne founded the Carolingian Empire (800-888 A.D)

In 919 A.D. Henry I of Saxony began the Saxon Dynasty.(919-1024 A.D.)
The rise of the Saxon Dynasty caused Germany to separate from control of France.

Henry's grandson Otto I established the Holy Roman Empire. (962-1806)

At its height,(1519-1556) the Holy Roman Empire covered Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Italy, Spain, the Spanish colonies in Asia and the Americas, and had inroads into Bohemia and Hungary.

During this time it was described as "The empire on which the sun never sets".

The Holy Roman Empire was later called the First Reich (Kingdom).

During this time Germany was made up of dozens of different kingdoms and states.
The largest kingdoms were Saxony, Bavaria, Swabia, and Franconia.
The rulers of the states were very powerful and responsible for electing emperors.

During the 14th century Germany's population plummeted due to the Great Famine (1315)
and the Black Death (1348-1350)

In 1517 the monk Martin Luther initiated the Protestant Reformation.
The Lutheran church became the official religion in many German states after 1530.

Religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant states led to the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648)
The war devastated Germany and reduced the population by about 30%.

In 1525 the Kingdom of Prussia was formed in northern Germany.
During the 18th century Prussia became the most powerful state in Germany.

In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved due to the Napoleonic Wars.
Following the fall of Napoleon, the German Confederation was formed in 1814.

In 1862 King William I of Prussia appointed Otto von Bismarck Prime Minister.

In 1871 Germany was unified under the German Empire, with Berlin as the capital.
William I became the 1st Kaiser (Emperor) of Germany.
Bismarck became the 1st Chancellor.
The German Empire was called the Second Reich.

In 1884 Germany had several colonies including Togo, Cameroon, German East Africa
(Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania)and German South-West Africa (Namibia).

Under Kaiser Wilhelm II (1888-1918) Germany became increasingly imperialistic.

During WWI Germany was part of the Central Powers.
During the war about two million German soldiers were killed.

In 1918 the German Revolution broke out.
Kaiser Wilhelm II and all German ruling princes abdicated.
The Weimar Republic was established.

As a result of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany lost a lot of territory and had to pay heavy war reparations.
The Treaty left many Germans poverty stricken and very angry and bitter.

From 1929-1933 Germany went through the Great Depression and a succession of unstable governments.
Many Germans became increasingly dissatisfied with the government.

By 1932, the Nazi Party controlled the majority of Parliament.
Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany from 1933-1945.
Hitler established a centralized totalitarian state.
Hitler's government was called the Third Reich.

The Third Reich began a brutal policy of extermination of minorities and dissidents.
Over 11 million people were murdered in Concentration Camps.
Six million of them were Jews.
Five million of them were non Jews.

In 1939 Germany invaded Poland which triggered WWII. (1939-1945)
WWII resulted in over 60 million deaths worldwide.

After WWII, Germany was partitioned by the Allies into military occupation zones.
The western area were controlled by France, Britain and the United States.
The eastern area was controlled by the Soviet Union.

The western area became West Germany in 1949 and established a republic.
Bonn became its capital.

That same year the Soviet controlled area became East Germany.
East Berlin became its capital.

West Germany began a period of economic growth during the 50's and joined NATO.

East Germany was an Eastern Bloc state under control of the USSR until 1990.

The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 to prevent East Germans from escaping to West Germany.
The wall became a symbol of the Cold War.

In 1989 Hungary opened its borders.
This caused thousands of East Germans to immigrate to West Germany via Hungary.

East German authorities eased the border restrictions, allowing its citizens to travel to the West.

In 1990 Germany regained full sovereignty.
Eastern and Western Germany were reunified that same year.

In 1994 Berlin became the capital of the reunified Germany.

Since reunification, Germany has taken an active role in the European Union and NATO.

Thanks for creating "Pray for Germany"

You researched a loot about my Home country, Thanks.

Sadly many people see us only for what evil our Grate-Grandparents dit.

That even (not a small nummber of) people tryed and died fighting (sabotag, information gathering and Help other escape, "Schindler and Chiune Sugihara" a the better known) this evil is rarely mentioned.

From the more than 5 Million non-jews People who wher murdered in this concentraten camps, many where German people themself. Most where Civilians.

Thanks

Thank you for this well researched compilation. I don't know if we need a prayer for environmental problems. We had most of them in the '80s and fixed a lot of them. For example it was dangrous swimming in the Rhine because of all the chemical waste that was disposed there. Today I would warn against swimming in the Rhine because the river is deep with a strong current. Also, our forests are no longer dying as they have before.

There are two details I became aware of only recently. They are mostly about how some things are perceived.

Humans tend to see physical size and overlook other factors. While Germany is smaller than most US states, it has one quarter (yes, 1/4) of the population of the entire USA.

Another thing I noticed was thriggered when someone said we (germans) should not be such pussies because of our history. That's when I noticed another not so small detail. Just before the Funding of the Second Reich Prussia gave the then super power Austria-Hungary a bloody nose. Just after the Funding Germany gave the also then super power France a bloody nose. I only mention WWI and WWII on the side as they are known by many and in both cases it took a good part of the World to beat Germany. That is followed by the 'Wirtschaftswunder' (our economic miracle) were Germany became an economic super power. The interesting part of this list? All that happened within 100 years.

So, should we stay meek and in the background? Or should we go an reassert ourselves?

Me? I'm for staying a little meek and in the background (though we really should help Macron to fix the problems of the EU or use our influence to fix them).

P.S. A friendly advice. Don't try to list our inventors and/or the inventions made here. One, it's going to be a long list. Two, I saw a youtube video of someone from the US who did it limited to more modern inventions and he nearly lost it when he noticed how often Germany appeared on his list and what was invented here. I was honestly surprised myself on some points.

Again, thank you.

Thank you.
Um, but I think you should add a prayer that we stay safe from terrorism and acts of extreme violence like we just recently suffered during Christmas market in Berlin for example.  We need to be more careful how to treat each other and take care of people and show respect to each and everyone, no matter where the came from or what skin colour or faith they have.

Great summary, but there is one tiny mistake. At the absolute height of the Holy Roman Empire under Karl V, the Empire basically spun around all of the world, for recently discovered America belonged to Spain and Spain to the Empire. Hence the saying "The sun never sets in my realm".

Other than that I totally approve of all you wrote.

Politically Germany and the whole EU is going through some great changes. Changes that, for the most part, are responsible for not bringing all the european countries closer together (except maybe on an economic level) but dividing the people even more. Because all politicians a looking out for isn't the people... it's plain cash and finances. Everytime I read or watch the news nowadays it's driving me nuts. And you know the best part? For what I just wrote (which is my plain opinion) I'd be probably called a Nazi around here... because I'm Anti - EU. No I'm not against the EU. I think the 'idea' of the EU is great. But we're by far not ready for it. We can see that in Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and probably soon in France. Oh and I better not start about the Ukraine... Anyway, just my two cents about Germany (which is by a lot of people seen as the leader of the EU).

This is a great thing and shows more knowledge, that most of my countries inhabitants combine.

But you could add, that we are a democracy since the end of WW 2. It's the one thing I hear time and again from especially U.S. Americans (who should know I think): the question, if Hitler is still our Leader and what kind of governing system we have now. ^^°

Unemployment is going back for some time now, in fact right now Germany has more people employed than ever in the last decade(s) due to making hard politcal and social incisions under chancellor Schröder.
environmental problems are a worldwide problem, but Germany is one of the major supporter for clean renewable energies and has done a lot in this area. Unfortunately this is also the reason for the high cost of living, as the new clean enery is a real price gouger (since it's done wrong reg. factories vs. family households (but it's in discussion to change it)).
Churches have enough income as there's church tax every member of a church has to pay. You have to leave the church in order to not pay this tax.
But churches are going thru difficult times as it really is expensive to maintain the buildings, especially if these are under monument protection. Therefore many churches have been changed into living space after being profaned.

Some present facts needs to be updated as they have changed since you wrote the article, resp. have changed before but some of your sources may have not the latests updates. Other than that, well one.

You probably should get someone from the country you're writing about in order to get the current political/economical/social facts right (goes for all countries). Wikipedia is not always up to date, it's great for history and older stuff, but it can't provide the current information as that may change too fast.  #3: Don't believe what you're told (or what you read). Double check Or even triple check, to be safe..... even if it's annoying, but wrong facts can ruin a good article and give a wrong impression.

But thanks for the work you put into this series to help educating and therefore raising understanding.

The disparities between rich and poor are growing constantly, there is some kind of political class that has risen and I see the democracy in danger. You maybe heard in the news about "prism" and other observing programs which I see as a great danger of privacy and also democracy.
