Saratoga Lounge
8:00 PM

Z'Rol sat in the Lounge with several of her friends. After months of being refitted the Saratoga was now underway for its newest mission. They would be arriving at the Hymer Cloud tomorrow and everyone had been busy in preparation.  She and others from Beta shift were now taking a break and catching up.

She smiled. It was always good to go back home to Tkara, but from the time she had been a child she had longed for the stars and being back on the Saratoga again was a thrill.

It was also good to see her shipboard friends again, who sat with her now.

She had often thought that Lieutenant Justin Ballard from the Physics Department would have made a worthy Tkarite. He was calm and practical but extremely cunning with a love for planning and implementing complex schemes.

Lieutenant Mark Tracker from Engineering was a sly hearted scoundrel who was adept at getting in and out of trouble.

Biomedical researcher and medical technician, Lieutenant Geoffery Flanders was keen witted and possessed of a wicked sense of humor.

And then of course there was Lieutenant Keisha Powell from Operations. Calm, self assured, determined and ambitious, she was good to have as a friend, dangerous to have as an enemy.

And while the men were Z’Rol’s friends and occasional bed-partners, Powell leaned more toward being a rival. But rivalry was good, it helped keep one sharp and over the years their rivalry, although it had often looked like it might harden into outright enmity, somehow never quite did. That fact and their slight amusement over it, kept them in each other's circle.

The five of them were in the middle of laughing over a story that Flanders was telling about some of his exploits in his native Belgium, when two newcomers entered the lounge and approached them. As soon as Z'Rol saw them her amused expression instantly vanished and she motioned for the others to be silent.

Her amethyst eyes took in the newcomers. They were Crewmen Tuskaro Alyen and Shylea L'Naym, two of the new crewmembers that had arrived on the Saratoga only the day before. They both hailed from Nlia, located, only a few light years from Tkara and were a Bonded couple. She knew right away why they were here.

Gracefully rising to her feet, she moved to stand directly in front of them. At six feet she towered over the two Nlians who both looked nervous but determined. They completely ignored everyone else in the room and focused solely on Z'Rol.

At length L'Naym, spoke. "Greetings, Daughter of Tkara," her voice was low and solemn.

Z'Rol nodded and spoke equally solemnly. "Greetings, Daughter and Son of Nlia." Her gaze took them both in. "You are two who walk together?" she asked.

"Yes." L’Naym squeezed her lifemate’s hand. "He is my heart and he is mine."

Alyen, spoke for the first time. "She is the air I breathe and I am hers."

Both Nlians paused and the air was now tense with waiting.

Z’Rrol nodded, her expression still solemn. "May your walk together be long and may none come between you."  She paused then made an ancient gesture that signified the giving of a promise.
"You have my word that I will not."

Her expression grew even more solemn as her eyes met L'Naym's. "Upon him shall no hand be laid…..."save yours."

Both Nlians let out the breaths they had obviously been holding. "You have our thanks, Daughter of Tkara, "L'Naym said softy as she made the gesture of the receiving of a promise.

The couple both nodded one last time and then quietly turned and left.

Z'Rol returned to her seat and to her staring friends.

"What was that all about?" Tracker asked.

"Its tradition," Z'Rol answered. "The Announcement and Acknowledgment. It's been performed from the time that our two species first came in contact two hundred years ago. Whenever a Bonded Nlian couple encounter a Tkarite who they know they'll be spending any length of time around, they 'announce' or introduce themselves.

“If the Tkarite in question is female the female Nlian announces. If male the male announces.
They introduce themself and their lifemate and make known their claim to them. The Tkarite must then acknowledge the claim and agree to abide by it before there can be any further interaction between them."

She nodded toward the door that the Nlians had exited. "No doubt those two began preparing for this the moment they learned that a Tkarite would be serving on the same ship as them. I expected it from the moment I learned that we were getting two Nlian crewmembers."

Flanders gave an amused chuckle. "So basically she was telling you; ‘He’s mine, hands off.' And you were promising to stay away from him."

The grim look the she turned on him cut his laughter short. "That is exactly what we were doing, Geoffrey. And I assure you that it is no laughing matter. If I hadn't acknowledged her claim they would have requested a transfer rather than stay on this ship. And I would have faced severe consequences from my own people."

She once again glanced at the doors. "For Nlians the preservation of their Mating Bonds is literally a matter of life and death."

Let me know what you think of her friends.
I wanted to give faces to more of the crew of the Saratoga.
There are over 100 people on board after all and every one of them has a story.

Another excellent  commission done by s2ka; I remember the scene from your fanfiction Amethyst Skies: Ch 4 (Briefing).

I enjoyed that story and the illustration accompanying it. I do find myself wondering how the ritual evolved.

    Me too.
The words and gestures have both both Tkarite and Nlian elements, but I haven't worked out which is which though.

I can tell you that both Tkarites and Nlians are very much into keeping their word.
The ancient Tkarites were a very cunning, often ruthless society and constantly trying to gain the advantage.
In such a society, the only way that agreements could work was if all parties involved never broke their word
or tried to back out of an agreement once given. Once the agreement/Pact was sealed it was inviolable.

Agreements were originally sealed with knives. In the presence of witnesses, each would cut themself and say:
"If I break this agreement the knife shall cut deeper."  Later that practice of cutting ended, but every Tkarite know
what would happen if they broke their word. By Z'Rol 's time it's ingrained into every Tkarite that you
"never" break your word once given.

One reason that the Announcing began was because of the radically different sexual practiced of the two species.
Nlians are strictly monogamous and Tkarites are anything but. If a bonded Nlian is touched in a sexual way
by anyone but their lifemate it results in the Burn Scars. The first years of meetings between Nlians and Tkarites
are referred to by both as 'The Time of Burns'. It was always accidental (Never against another's will)
    but still traumatic.

As always I welcome your input and suggestions!

Perhaps one of your Nilans can tell one of the human crewmembers a story from The Time of Burns to explain how the cultures created this ritual. It's fortunate that both Nilans and Tkarites have traditions of taking bonds and oaths seriously. And what about this idea: The Nilans and Tkarites might not have had something along the lines of a universal translator, so they gradually worked out a language and alphabet travelers from both cultures could share. A sort of Esperanto, you could say.

The early Nlians needed to work together to survive and to work together required cooperation and trust.
Every Nlian was raised to see other Nlians as brothers and sisters and to treat each other accordingly.
Simple verbal agreements were usually enough but they did have ceremonies and rituals for agreements
of greater import, such as marriage, or accepting a new chieftain/leader.

As for the Time of Burns, that is a possibility. And of course the Nlians have more recent stories such as
with the Orions and Koel See'a. In some ways the Tkarites are safer to be around than some species, including humans.
Tkarites are dangerous but if you're worried about sexual assault you're as safe as a jewel around them.

Also in regards to language, when the Tkarites made First Contact with the Nlians in 2015, did have
some form of translator. They had made First Contact  the C'tekians a few years before in 1965.
So they would have had some experience with translating. For the Nlians though this was completely new.
And of course the C'tekains would have had a completely different language.

On a completely different subject what did you think of the picture itself? I wanted people to meet other
characters of the Saratoga. What did you think of Z'Rol's friends?

Z'Rol's friends sound like an interesting lot. What surprised me is the fact she's had or is having a sexual relationship with some of them. Kind of surprised that Tkarites would find humans attractive!

Its not really all that surprising, Humans and Tkarites are very similar in appearance physically speaking.
Many humans find the different colored skin exotic and vise versa.
And look at what the Risians and the Orions are like!

I haven’t gotten to this yet, but the scene is beautiful and is a great demonstration of the differences between the two cultures. Even if reading the name Flanders made me think of The Simpsons, LOL!

Thank you. This artist is really great!

I wanted to show some of the shared history between both of the cultures.
Even though they're both very different culture, they are next door neighbors that have interacted for 200 years.
New ways and rituals would have developed between them both as a result of tier interactions.

Regarding Flanders I have him his name because it shows his origins (Belgium)
I also wanted the crew to see more of the crew besides Kirk and his main officers.
