Description The same drawing as before, with the addition of the Spider, the Phantom, Doc Savage, and Indiana Jones. The Phantom (title character of The Phantom Detective pulp magazine) was the second pulp character introduced (after the Shadow), and the third-best selling (after the Shadow and Doc Savage).

Indiana Jones is a bit of a cheat; unlike the other characters, he does not actually date to the 1930s (Raiders of the Lost Ark debuted in 1981). Nevertheless, he is very much in the spirit of the times, and his adventures could have easily led him to an encounter with anyone of the other notables depicted. Also, he's one of my favorite characters, so the artist's privilege gets him a pass.

There is one other major character whom I've left undrawn: The Crimson Avenger. The Crimson is of course noteworthy as one of DC's first costumed superheroes, first appearing in Detective Comics #20 (October 1938), before even the Bat-Man in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939). Ultimately I opted not to draw him because of his visual similarity to the Shadow. Who knows why so many characters are defined in such terms?

The Shadow knows!

I can't believe I didn't recognize Dick Tracy at first! Shame on me.
