My submission for the group Darkest Hyrule's [link] contest, "The Eye of Truth". The contest theme is to show what "really happened" in any Zelda game.

Despite its cheery cartoony look, Wind Waker is one of the darkest Zelda games out there. An entire civilization is destroyed, two whole races wiped off the earth, and those who survive are forced to eke out a living on what's left, a vast ocean bereft of fish. And in the end, the meager remnants of the Golden Kingdom are destroyed by one who claimed to work in its best interests.

So here's what "really happened" at the time of the flood. King Daphnes Nohasen couldn't handle the return of Ganon without the presence of a Hero, so he flooded Hyrule...not the goddesses. After all, he hands Link the Wind Waker, which contains the power of the gods and controls the weather...

The Gorons survived by staying at the tops of their mountains. The Kokiri clung to the tops of the trees. The Zora spent so much time helping the others, they found they had no home for themselves. (I dunno, how do you explain fish turning into birds because of an *excess* of water?) The few Shekiah that survived the previous wars perished. But Daphnes saved the worst of his wrath for the Gerudo, even those who had never supported the Dark King. He did not want to risk them birthing another Lord of Evil. Ganondorf turned his power toward the effort to save his people, but it was too little, too late. Once he was in human form again, Daphnes could seal his power with the Master Sword, deep beneath the surface of the sea. So Ganondorf waited for the magic of the other Triforce Bearers to manifest itself once again...

How did Daphnes manage to split the Triforce of Wisdom? Maybe it has something to do with Zelda's head wound...

This pic took a couple weeks at least. I started it the day the contest was announced and worked on it about an hour or two every day. I drew the lineart first, and did the rest in Photoshop. It's the most complex thing I've made, and I think it turned out pretty good.

T-T so sad. Love how you had Zelda pleading her father to stop. Really makes it seem real.

Thanks. It's one of my most involved pics.

What sucks about having Wisdom without Courage or Power is knowing what will happen as well as the fact that you can do nothing to stop it.

Exactly, and that is why people don't give Wind Waker enough credit. It really is one of the best Zelda games out there. And for me i'm just in love with the Zelda story plot. It's is one of my favorite stories in the world.

Well, if you look at my early stuff, you can see that it has changed over time.

Some were so bad that I took them down later on.

I guess that's kind of like my fanfiction. My first fanfic was a huge horrible Mary-Sue adventure. But I never took it down, just so I can look back on it and laugh

My first fanfiction was a horrible Mary-Sue adventure, but this was back before the Internet, so I couldn't embarrass myself.

So this is what happened? O_O
I always wondered why the Goddesses could do nothing but flood the land anyway...
Great work!

Well, what I think happened, anyway. As much as I love Wind Waker, there are a lot of unexplained plot holes. Like why Daphnes sent Link to fight Ganondorf with a sword that he must have known wouldn't work.

Yeah... But I wouldn't say D. Nohansen is bad either.
Of course there are gaps in the story as always though...

(C'est quoi la Radio des Milles Collines en passant?)

Radio des Milles Collines translates to "Thousand Hills Radio". It was a station in Rwanda that was involved in the genocide.

(I do speak French, but haven't done so in years.)

Well, most people consider God/gods who created the Floods in Flood Myths a genocidal mass murderer. Guess this King is in Hell then

The picture and the story behind it are both awesome!!
I had to laugh at your comment of "The Zora spent so much time helping the others, they found they had no home for themselves. (I dunno, how do you explain fish turning into birds because of an *excess* of water?)". I completely agree. I mean, seriously?! Did the salt water make them suddenly grow feathers? haha. And really, rock people survive before fish people, in a land full of water.

Anyway, great explanation!I like the single dead Sheikah It ties them in well.

Seldavia In reply to SquirtSapphire [2010-10-02 01:47:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks much!

Yeah, the Zora/Rito thing has everyone stumped. Why not turn into saltwater fish? Jabu-Jabu must not be a very good guardian god. But then, all he ever did was eat people.

There has to be a Shekiah somewhere. There could have been more than just Impa, they're supposed to stay hidden.

SquirtSapphire In reply to Seldavia [2010-10-08 13:19:04 +0000 UTC]

haha, thats true. Jabu Jabu failed, so the dragons of Death Mountain took over, and decided randomly "They must have wings, like us!" haha

Definitely. I mean, Impaz is still alive when Twilight Princess comes around (Whenever it comes into the timeline), theres gotta be more sneaky ninjas!

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up.

I point out that you're getting really good with the photoshop coloring. I know it takes a long time and is really tedious... I don't think I have ever done a picture this big. But I sepecially like the way you did the water... I'm really bad at water. My brain tries to comprehend how to draw it and ends up moving sideways through the concept or something. :<

Also, Daphnes' expression is really scary. D:

It's not just because I hate the man. That's the scariest thing in this entire picture. Which says a lot. Because individually each idea is pretty terrifying. Anything that can reduce the King of Evil to one knee is heavy stuff.

Seldavia In reply to SilverBellsAbove [2010-08-10 03:27:05 +0000 UTC]

Coloring is hard. I did Ganondorf, Daphnes, and Zelda last and they are the only ones who don't look flat. It's so easy to mess up the illusion of depth.

The water style I copied from a famous Japanese painting...you know, the one of the tidal wave. Much easier than trying to draw from an actual photo.

A lot of fics have Ganondorf treating is people poorly. And I suppose toward the end he did, but I don't thing magic alone would have kept them all under his sway for the entire time he was in charge of the Gerudo.

SilverBellsAbove In reply to Seldavia [2010-08-10 11:10:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it is. Right now I'm experimenting with the tablet, and although some things are much easier (tapered lines, for one)a lot of other things are still just as hard and take a long time... D:

Yeah, I noticed about the tidal wave. You know, I don't mind. It does seem like almost a painting-like snapshot. I always felt that painting was one of yin and yang anyway...

Well, of course he treated them poorly at the end. He went nuts, holed himself in a castle, and went on rampages sowing monsters in Hyrule and messing up his own Spirit Temple by giving his moms free reign to do horrible things. But the question is, did he mean to do all that? Power is horrible when you first get it and don't know how to keep it. You keep squeezing harder and harder to keep if from slipping through your fingers, and suddenly everyone's out to get you and you have to defend yourself, and then you start hunting the things you're paranoid will unseat you (better get rid of them than have to defend yourself!) and suddenly you're isolated in the middle of a floating tower surrounded by lava with your people brainwashed and the Zora frozen and the Gorons being fed to a dragon.

It all gets out of hand pretty fast. People think that what Ganondorf did at the end of TP was pretty random and happened just because he's evil. Which is wrong. Take a look at all sorts of people in power. Presidents will appoint Justices that have their same point of view to defend their opinions even after they leave office. At points in history kings have proclaimed whole families traitors just because they're getting too close for comfort. The thing is, none of those people in real life had acess to a limitless magical power and connection to the Gods. Ganondorf does... and what he does once he gets it is way more realistic than lots of people realize. D:

Seldavia In reply to SilverBellsAbove [2010-08-10 16:07:32 +0000 UTC]

What I mean is that he is often written being cruel to his people from the beginning. Which doesn't make sense, because a tribe of warrior women isn't going to take that from a King when they can just as well do without one. Koume and Kotake don't even seem to be known to most of the Gerudo - who attribute most of their activities to Nabooru - probably because Koume and Kotake spend their time in the Spirit Temple, and the other Gerudo stay in the fortress.

Also, it makes sense that regardless of everything else, the Gerudo would take some pride in the fact that one of their own people managed to overthrow the ruling family. You never see any Gerudo in Hyrule proper, so they may not know what a sorry state it's in, as long as Ganondorf sends them what food or luxuries he can find. In fact, Ganondorf could easily argue that he shouldn't put Gerudo lives in danger of Hylian/Goron/Zora rebels when he has all these cannon-fodder monsters to fight for them.

Yeah, this too. *nod*

Though, I wonder how Kotume and Kotake got to young Ganondorf to teach him Dark Arts if that's the case. Or got instated as his 'moms.'

... this just is giving me images of Ganondorf feverishly sending back goods to them, but they're beginning to rebel anyway and he doesn't know what to do, so he begins letting them be brainwashed by Kotume and Kotake and he just goes nuts and doesn't care any more...

Poor guy... D:

I think Koume and Kotake instated themselves as his 'moms'. They saw he had potential and wanted to groom him to be an overlord. I imagine things got out of hand pretty quickly.

What, when he proved to be eviler, stronger, faster, more clever, more magically powerful, and more ambitious than them in spades?

Never raise a Mordred. Children supplant parents eventually. Even if you're Morgan LeFay-- or two in this case.

What an image!! This is stunning and so moving!
I love how the different fragments all flow so nicely together, and the expressions are spot on.
Ever since I first viewed your gallery, I was envious of your ability to show emotions without any problems.
I've never been able to draw emotions that well, while you seem to do it without any issues at all.
As for the background...
The waves are FANTASTIC. You've got to make a tutorial on how to make tidal waves.
The sky is dark and forbidding, and the faint blur of the horizon is very well done.

10/5, 1,000/100... so on and so forth.
This is your best artwork yet, and I can't wait to see the next one!

If you look at the very beginning of my gallery, the expressions aren't terribly impressive. Drawing faces is very difficult. Actually, I wasn't happy with some of the expressions in this one (the Kokiri girl doesn't look frightened enough, I think), but it's certainly improved over the couple years I've been doing this.

I'm proud of the waves, though. It's actually photoshop color over lineart I did a couple years ago.

Thanks! The sparkly effect was actually just a photoshop brush...very easy to do.

The wave was another story. I actually took the lineart from this pic [link] and then colored over it with Photoshop. Took me a while to get the right colors and textures.
