Description A present for my boyfriend's aunt, because I adore her. She really has a thing for hands, so I've wanted to draw a hand-centric picture for her for years now but couldn't think of anything interesting. My boyfriend had this idea and so I drew it. The coloring is kind of interesting! I did this on vellum bristol (I have difficulties with the vellum texture) and I'm trying to branch out from the burnishing technique I use pretty much exclusively with my colored pencils.

So... hope you think it looks okay! We'll see what she thinks when I give it to her. I might do some recoloring later if I wind up not liking this, but for now, here it is...

I like that you're not afraid of warm colors... and I think her "skin" turned out very well!

I tend toward a yellowish color palette but also I really like blues... I have no idea how that happens. The yellow-green was a gamble because most people hate that color, so I'm glad it paid off!

The skin was interesting - never colored gray skin before - but I'm glad it looks all right! I had to throw some pink gray into it to give it some depth.

Yeah, I know how much you enjoy coloring skin tones, so I was interested to see how the grayscale version would turn out, but I think it really works well.

I think I was expecting a more spring-ish color scheme due to the season, but the colors you picked make the whole picture more lively & positive. I think it'll make a great gift!

I guess that would have been bright peridot green leaves. I almost did that! But then I had a bright green background, and I couldn't very well make the leaves the same color... so this followed.

What season do you think this picture is?

Hm... I would say late summer, like, August-ish! Only not a Texas August, obviously, as there is still green to be seen. XD

Yeah, I had some general ideas for the color in mind, but I wasn't sure whether I was going to make the background dark or light until I'd messed around with a digital color test. Were you expecting more blues? I would've expected more blues if it were me.

I think that the red vase is my emerging understanding of color theory coming out, but that might just be me.

I'm glad you don't hate the colors!

I guess I wasn't expecting yellow ^^. But the yellow really brightens it up -- adds a certain boldness or something. Your color choices remind me of Franz Marc!

I don't know Franz Marc!

It's actually technically a green. I had to go dig my green colored pencils out of a drawer because I so seldom color anything green. I have green pencils in triplicate that I haven't used in ten years. It's really something.

I'm so relieved people don't hate the yellow. There are certainly strong reactions, but so far they seem positive.

Franz Marc is one of my favorite artists . Next time you come over, I can show you some of his stuff, since I have it hanging on the wall :3:3:3.

Yay, thanks! I wasn't feeling entirely sure about the colors on this one, but it seems to be getting a positive reaction, so that's good! <3 People are usually very down on yellow-greens and green-yellows, hence my apprehension, but yay, it seems to work out!

This is absolutely beautiful! It reminds me of ancient Grecian myths, and makes me feel all nostalgic.

Thank you. I love Greek myths, so that's a very nice thing to be compared to. I was envisioning Greek and Roman statues when I started drawing the picture, so it's an appropriate comparison.

Thank you so much. <3

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't have any money, so I can't frame it! I'm just going to give it to her as-is and hope she likes it. I had to draw all my presents this year because I can't afford to buy anything for everyone, but so far nobody's complained.

It takes alot more effort to take the time to draw out something that you think the person will really like then to go pick somehting off the shelf that took you all of 5 seconds to get, so a picture is always a great idea for a gift!!

I'd like to think so, but a lot of times my hand-made gifts wind up forgotten or thrown away, or left to rot at the bottom of a pile. It's sad but so it goes. I try not to let it get to me.
