Description Still desperately needing feedback....
I think she's coming along rather well though, if I do say so myself. Which I do, obviously.
Heavy, heavy referencing from this lovely portrait [link] by the fantastic ~missinnocentblonde .

Edit: WOW. YOU GUYS ARE THE GREATEST. 3 awesome critiques on my crappy little WIP? Thank you so much, everyone. On the downside, I no longer have the opportunity to whine about not getting any feedback...but on the plus side, you guys are crazy awesome and helpful and fantastic!

Well, it certainly isn't bad, since you seem to have put much work in this. What lacks however, is detail, particularly with the nose and ears (if it had any).

And, to add, you have a great perspective for bright colors, but there's no harm in adding a little gradient and texture in the hair and skin so as not to appear ripple-ish and cascaded, especially with the paint brush stokes. I've done the exact thing many times, so don't worry. And you might want to add a little gloss in the lips and eyes, if you want it to appear more realistic.

Also, nice work. Keep up the good work.

~Pi.

Well first off, I'd like to say I'm so far liking how you colored the face, especially the forehead and cheek bone and the texture looks nice too. Also, I like how you outlined and highlighted the eyes (especially the one on the right), it makes them really pop.

First off, the picture needs to be sharpened. I've made this mistake myself when I first started out in digital art so I understand, but you should try using smaller brush sizes to sharpen the features even if you feel it doesn't look right at first it does help. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

As for the facial features themselves, I have a few things I feel should be improved. The nose looks a little boxy and straight and I feel the lips are a little off center and awkward. I also feel some of the features are kind of faded like the eyebrows, eyelashes (especially on the darker side where they should seem the thickest), and hair. Using thinner brushes for the details in the hair and eyelashes and trying to thicken the eyebrows and sketch the individual hairs on it could help. Also, I think the hair seems a little sketchy. Try following the body of the hair with more consistent lines. Also, the hair seems a little dull as well. It needs less grey tones of the base color for the shading and maybe try using different tones. Like in the reference, the base color is a bleach blonde, but the shadows are more of an orange-yellow and brown at the roots. Grey tones are better for distance and you should try to avoid them when shading strands that are supposed to be on the same ground or closer to the observer than the face.

Lastly, I'm not sure whether you were going to add it later since this is a WIP, but also try to add more highlights to the side the light is coming from (mainly on the hair) and try adding more contrast between the dark side and the side the light is hitting. Also, try adding a neck and shoulders so it seems less floaty.

All in all, this picture has a lot of potential. I hope my critique was helpful in some way. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> Keep drawing!

Wow, SUPER helpful critique! There's a lot of useful information in here that I'm hopefully going to improve from! I'm particularly still quite nervous about colours in the foreground vs background and depth created by light hitting different features, so it was really awesome to get some feedback on that, seeing as I was too scared to try it before posting!
I also knew posting this that her features still need quite a bit of refining, especially the lips and nose - oh gosh. Thanks for the advice on the smaller brushes - I get skittish about using smaller, sharper ones because my mistakes are way more obvious, but...gotta learn one way or another, right? Thanks so much!

Yeah, I think every artist is a little nervous when it comes to foreground vs background coloring and smaller brushes. I believe depth is everyone's enemy and I literally had the same fear of people seeing my mistakes with smaller, harder brushes even though I loved art by other people who had solid thin lines. Eventually, I took a step out of my comfort zone and tried it and SUCKED but then when I improved with practice it was more obvious and it did make it look better in the long run. Now I can't imagine using thicker brushes. And as for the nose and lips, don't beat yourself up about it because that's the hardest part about portrait art in my opinion (which is why I favor more cartoonish styles when I'm doodling or just in general so I don't have to put full details on the nose, lol). But either way, I'm glad my critique helped you. I can't wait to see the finished version of that picture!

I'm glad you linked to the original photo since that gives me something to compare it to and makes it easier to critique (especially since portraits aren't normally my thing, but with a reference photo I can spot what needs to be done/changed)

I agree with the first critiquer that the neck/body needs to be added, though I assume that was going to be done later. I think the main thing you need to consider is contrast, the dark areas in the photo are really dark (her eyelashes, eyebrows and some parts of her hair) but they feel kinda faded here. The light areas seem close enough to the source though e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Sharpness is another thing too, it is often lacking in a digital artist's early work so you're not alone. Some parts feel very blurry or airbrushy, particularly the lips and nose. Smaller, harder brushes should be used for refining sharp areas after the basic shading of it is done e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/nā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod"/>

Seriously, thank you SO much for the feedback. The thing about the harder brushes and darker areas were especially helpful - gotta go through and burn some stuff up!

Mind if I link you to the finished product when I'm done? You don't have to critique it or anything - just want to show you how much awesomer it's going to be!

I definitely did, so thanks again! I'm trying to get some practice and a steady hand with this kind of stuff, but I eventually want to move away from basic portrait stuff. I feel like some nasty art thief referencing so heavily, too....

You should add a neck to the head. Because it looks like it is just floating. Work on your proportions to make the face more realistic such as the chin (needs to be longer)

The hair should have more detail. Add more dark values to it.

The mouth looks awkward. The lips should be more detailed. The lips are to cartoonish and not proportionate with the rest of the face.

The eyes should have more values included. Add light and dark values to make the eyes pop out more to the viewer. Just add more detail to the whole drawing.

Thank you for the critique! It's definitely helpful for me to get feedback like this so I know which direction to take it next.
That being said, I do sort of wish that you had taken into account the fact that it was a WIP - 'just add more detail to the whole drawing' seems a little redundant.
Thanks though.

Nice start. You should work on the eyes. Add more details to the pull and work on the eyelashes so it doesn't look like random strokes. Make the right eyebrow darker. Basically add more detail to every aspect of the drawing and it would look better. It is a nice drawing other than that!
