Description
While out doing some Uber driving, I discovered a Tawny Frogmouth on the side of the road. Having people in the car at the time, I had to keep going. Thankfully after finishing the trip and coming back to check again, a full 30 minutes later, I discovered the bird was alive, and more importantly, uninjured, at least visually.
I gave it a few head pats, then it allowed me to pick it up. It was quite placid and well-behaved. I was a little surprised at this. It could be that it was hit by a car while in flight, and thus mildly stunned or disoriented. Who knows how long it was sitting there. There is some poop around it but thankfully the bird itself was clean. It seemed to wake up and take notice of the fact that I walked it off the road and out of harm's way, turning it's head to see what was happening. After a short time sitting on my wrist (while I was trying to find an animal rescue phone number that operated late at night) it decided it had recovered and took flight - with no signs of instability. Satisfied it was ok, I counted myself lucky to get close to such a beautiful native bird. I'm glad it didn't fall prey to a fox or a cat as well.
