I stopped shading like this, and I really should practice it more--with some neatness and control it can be very expressive.
(I doodle them kissing badly so often, and I needed something to get me off my ass WRT stagnation, so I decided "Who better to learn how to draw kissing with?" Originally there was the chance of other people's kissing, but nah. Not tired of these two yet...

Well, it's not having as much fun as his other hand...
More seriously, I think the problem is shaping. I didn't capture the foreshortening to properly get the feeling they're pointing toward us, so they are just kinda stubby and ... there.
