to me, this really doesn't look like an Italian town!

It is true, this is one of the South Tyrol town that has become Italian with the peace treaty at the end of World War I with the dismemberment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The inhabitants of South Tyrol are Italian citizens but are native German speakers. The architecture is typical Austrian and Bavarian.
