Description King of the last days

First painting of the Montlaur-series, which i started about three years ago (and never finished btw ). It depicts Bernhard de Montlaur, Seigneur d'Aubénas et de Chantraine, from a story i began to write down as i still was at secondary school. It's mainly about the Knights Templar and the grail legend...

Yesssyess, i know! He looks quite (if that ain't already an understatment ) shabby and unalluring (rather like a homo neandertalensis ), but that was done intentionally!
Let me explain ye: i wanted to depict him at the final stage of his life being tormented by crucial questions, most people ask themselves at the autumn of their lives. What's the meaning of life?
So i decided to make him a look a bit like out of scene from "Christ before Pilate". There are many other reminiscences of biblical themes...and of the grail legends, too! Just think of the fisher king and the san-g-real!

Watercolors on parchment (cheap, industrial one), salt, China ink, colored inks applicated with a fake sponge, leaf gold, masking medium, Chinese white, Photoshop 7 and some dirty fingerprints . Reference used.

I was struck by the sheer anguish in his face, then on examining the larger view, found that the figure in the left hand upper corner was intruiging -

The figure in the left upper corner is a monogram - maybe you know the one made for Charlemagne - and it stands either for the family name "Montlaur" or "Montlor" (transcribed into German). But you can also interpret it in different ways, when you turn the monogram...

Indeed, it is!! But the guy on this pic has a more severe facial expression and rougher facial traits!

Again, wonderfully done, i always love that kinda grungy look. The look that shows all the filth and grime, magnified by stark lighting. This spiece only touches on that but is enough to be unique, with those colors... uncommon for such a subject

Probéier et einfach mol aus! Domat kann e supper Effekter maan (stree einfach e bessi Salz op d'naass Foarw). Et muss een sech just dru gewinnen, dass een vun hell op donkel moole muss a Fehler schlecht bis guer net méi korrigéiere kann. Dofir get e dann zum Gléck nach de Computer!
