Description The Princeton Metropolitan Police Department is split into six patrol districts: Area A-1 (Midtown Princeton, plus the Equestrian Patrol and Riverine Patrol units), Area A-2 (Northwest Princeton), Area A-3 (Northeast Princeton), Area A-4 (Southeast Princeton), Area A-5 (Southwest Princeton), and Area A-6 (Highways; I-25 and OB-38). In addition to the six patrol districts, the department also maintains two citywide districts: Area A-7 encompasses the Special Responses Division, and Area A-8 encompasses the Operations Support Division.

The Special Responses Division oversees eight special operations subdivisions: the Emergency Response Unit, the SWAT team, the Dive & Underwater Recovery Team, the Riverine Patrol Unit, the Equestrian Patrol Unit, the Bomb Squad, the Counterterrorism Response Unit, and the Air Operations Unit. The officers assigned to the Special Response Division are tasked with various patrol duties that may be above a regular patrol officers scope of training. The Equestrian Patrol Unit is assigned to Area A-1, and patrols the various parks and streets within the district, as well as providing crowd control across the city. The department currently has eight equestrian patrol officers and horses.

Equestrian Patrol units are staffed by up to four equestrian patrol officers and equine officers. They are equipped with Axon Fleet 3 forward and rear facing cameras, a mobile data terminal, five road flares, four traffic vests, four sets of riot gear, four horse lead ropes, four saddles, two rolls of crime scene tape, two gun locks for one Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle and one Benelli Nova Tactical shotgun each, one dry chemical extinguisher, one first aid kit, one AED, and one Narcan overdose kit.
