Description PHEW okay so about eight hours work gone into this.... Photoshop CS3, with two brushes (number one, one pixel hard round brush and number 11 soft chalk brush).

Here's the reference I used: [link] ยคt=35940_1245547020408_fullcopy.jpg

I'm supplying the reference in the hope that people may want to offer me a critique

I'm happy with my progress but I'd love to progress more.... I guess I'm going for realism but I'd like it to remain still recognizable as a painting.

I'm learning that my main problems include proportions and values.

So, got any suggestions for me?

I'm actually going to take these critiques on board vry srsly and hopefully improve this Dean portrait

omg I'm so tired. I need some sugar *______*

thanks for looking ^_^ <333

Jensen, as I've come to find out, is VERY difficult to capture. He looks different from every angle so you challenged yourself right from the get-go. Good for you!

Values are REALLY tough to nail because they're so relative, and you can fiddle with them to emphasize whatever parts of the painting you wish. You may already do this, but you can periodically throw a 'desaturate' layer over top the art to see how your values are working. For example, you totally lose the apple because it's the same value as his coat.

His ear is spectacular! I know that might seem funny but ears are not easy.

Couple of observations:
~eyelashes, especially on guys, aren't black. No mascara! Unless you're Adam Lambert.
~no lipstick. Even if guys have rosy lips (as Jensen does), you might wanna downplay that in the interest of masculinity. Unless you're Adam Lambert.
~there's this thing called 'subsurface scattering'; it's awesome! It's when light passes through fleshy bits and makes the skin look warmer, more blood-filled, in those areas. It gives life to skin. Frequently seen in the nose and ears and fingers, especially if backlit.
~fun color theory to try: if your highlights are warm, try making cooler shadows. For instance, if your lighting is very gold, try making cooler purplish shadows. And speaking of shadows, they're never as dark as you think, especially in bright light because there will ALWAYS be reflected light bouncing into the dark areas, brightening them up.

Lotsa food for thought, but I think you're ready for it! Feel free to ask if you need to see examples or have any questions. I sure can blab sometimes, can't I? Awesome job!

Omg, thank you so much for the in-depth critique!!!

Yes, Jensen I find can be a nightmare to paint >__< But I like a good challenge ^^ I didn't even notice the apple getting lost... I'll see what I can do with it!! Thanks for the compliment on his ears, I love to paint ears strangely enough :3

LOL I uh never even noticed I had given Dean some nice eyeliner/mascara :3 I dun't want him to look like Adam Lambert, I don't think Dean would like it .__. I've also received a few other comments about his lips XD I took him into PS and desaturated it and it looks SO much better XD He no longer looks like a painted whore

I see what you're saying about the subsurface scattering I think I'll try to stick some of it in there and see how it goes. It may or may not work out, I don't think I've ever purposely tried it before so I'll give it a go anyway!
I'll give the cooler shadows a go too.

Thanks so much again for a great critique!!! It rocked!! You didn't blab at all, you were very helpful and I really appreciate it!!! <3333

Oh wow, this is amazing!
I really like the look on his face, with the frown and his mouth a little open!
I also like how you've used the lightning and how you shaded the right side!

It's gorgeous, well done!

Oh gosh girlie, you sure do draw these boys well!
I really love the cropping, and the blurred apple and thumb in the foreground. However, I think the apple could've used some brighter colours?

The way you draw brows, hair and ears is so amazing. His eyes are incredibly detailed looking, too.

I would say that the shadows on his neck could be darker, and the redness of his lips should be toned down a bit. I think that shade of red stands out too much for the green hues in his skin tone.

I. Love. This!

I agree with you on the apple, hun!

Also, yep, the shadow on the neck... I struggled with it quite a bit and I agree with cha about it I'll keep knockin' at it and see what I can do ^^

LOL people keep saying HIS LIPS ARE TOO RED XDXD They are XDXD I didn't notice it until people pointed it out, can you believe it??? XD

Thanks so much hun for the crit, and for looking at this piece <3333333333

I think that you could do a red with a bit of green in it or something, and his lips would blend in better.
I can definitely see how that neck shadow could be tricky! When I looked at the original I noted that as being a difficult spot.

No problem! I like helping <333

Oh my gosh, his hair is slightly off... I'm REALLY just kidding. It's amazing. Your artwork is stunning, a spitting image of the original. You've brought out his eyes quite a bit in this rendition. The colors and shading are fantastic. You've captured this scene well.

I've always been a Microsoft person but hey.

I really like this I think the values are good and the proportions are too. To me the saturation seems to be a bit low. As a frame in a film you wouldn't notice because of the context, but as a still image is seems a bit gray (Down to personal preference though!) as well as a bit green. I'm guessing this is because of the reference. As a matter of fact, looking at the ref now I can tell that they've used some sort of dramatic greeny filter. This is something I personally wouldn't have kept if I were to make a painting of this particular snapshot. Easily fixed by adjusting the colour balance (Ctrl+B on a PC). Move the cursors around a bit and you'll see that you can end up with something a bit more natural (i recommend trying to move away from Yellow and Cyan).

Apart from that I think this is good stuff! I would probably (can't believe I'm saying this) be a bit bolder with the highlights. To add some more depth. To think that I used to nag you about the shading once!

Lovely work!

omfg... thanks so much kitteh!! I can't believe I didn't know about colour balance.... I've been just fecking around with saturation and hue all the time, but it doesn't seem to do as good a job! I've just thrown it quickly into PS and used the colour balance and it already looks miles better

I didn't actually use any filter on the ref... but I did try to bump up the saturation a good bit on it. I agree with you on the highlights though! Will bump them up tomarrow and see what he looks like then

Thanks so much for the feedback, doll! It's much appreciated and it'll help make this a much stronger piece ^_^ <3<3<3

glad you found it helpful! I didnt mean that YOU put a filter on the ref. What I meant was that I think the peoples making the supernatural series may have added a filter on top of the show for added atmosphere, and since you were looking at that screenshot, you automatically just went for the same colour balance they used, which is a bit greeny.

Can't wait for the results, babe <3

*gasp* this turned out AMAZING! totally worth the effort you put in! i think my fave part is his eyes! you got a lot of depth in those iris'.

a good trick to check if your values are correct is to view the painting in grayscale, that way your eyes aren't all distracted with pretty colours.

keep up the good work kiddo! and wow! only 8 hours?! that is impressive.
