See the video of the painting process HERE

Quite some time ago I stopped doing these Japanese styled paintings because I no longer could think of any possible things to do or ways to do it. About a year later I realized that I had only barely scratched the surface and that there are so many things that I can do. Traditional Japanese art has so many different styles, so many different ways to express things, and there are also so many Pokemon that fit the style more than well.
For some reason I had completely overlooked one of the most obvious and the most fitting subjects for a painting like this. Ho-Oh is probably one of the best subjects for a Japanese styled painting, not only because birds are very often depicted in them but because of the legend, because of Tin Tower and Ekruteak city.
I think I will be doing more paintings like this in the future. I do have ideas for pictures with bolder outlines, the ones I've been doing the most, but I think it is refreshing to do things a bit differently and experiment different styles. This piece was also quite experimental. I have been using inks more or less in my paintings but this is the first painting with more than two colours that I have done in inks only. I didn't even touch a finleliner or my watercolours. Just inks and brushes. And coffee to dye the paper.
I also streamed the whole painting process and it was a lot of fun. I'll see if I could do a timelapse of the video since it was uninterrupted and features the whole painting process.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

I'm glad you like it! I think my first inspiration was Hokusai but after going to an exhibition that showcased more Japanese ukiyo-e pieces I also discovered Hiroshige. I think he's an even bigger inspiration to me. I adore his work!

This is just lovely. I like this portrayal of ho-oh. Most of the time legendaries are portrayed as deadly or lordly, very often with a heavy emphasis on their power (except I guess mew et al) This picture though just has the bird serenely seated in a tree, almost looking like a bird of paradise. I love the gold sheen between the feathers. It along with the intricate details of the flowers reminds me of seeing pheasants in Botanical Gardens. Some of the birds there have a similar golden look. Also, I really love that mountain. So simple and elegant, it definitely captures the look of Japanese-style mountains. This bird is quite the splendid sight.Β

Thank you very much!
I agree with you about legendaries being represented as powerful creatures very often. Personally I've always seen Ho-Oh as a more serene and mystical legend rather than something that would go on a rampage and danger the world. Also, in Japanese art the themes are often more serene anyway, especially with birds. I recently bought an art book about mythical beasts in Japanese art and there are a lot of different kinds of pieces, from serene to more aggressive ones. I need to study it more and see if I can use what I'll learn in my future pieces.

ShadeofShinon In reply to SleepwalkerSerenade [2014-02-08 16:39:48 +0000 UTC]

If you mean the original I haven't really though about selling it. It's not like I'm absolutely not selling it but I'm rather fond of the piece so the price would be quite high. A print can be arranged and I can mail drawings or prints anywhere.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SleepwalkerSerenade In reply to ShadeofShinon [2014-02-09 01:07:29 +0000 UTC]

When you are ready to sell the original, if ever, I only ask for first dibs. Money is no item; I mean, I don't expect you'll make it outrageously priced, but original work is difficult to gauge value in, especially when the illustrator is attached to it. But those things come and go, and when it does, I want you to know I love it, and I would definitely be willing to pay for it.

ShadeofShinon In reply to SleepwalkerSerenade [2014-02-10 23:51:06 +0000 UTC]

The time when I'm completely ready to part from this painting might never come, just like with many other pictures I have sold. And yet I have sold them after all. Sometimes a good price makes it easier and sometimes I just know I can't have "maybe" as an option forever. I am glad to hear you like this painting so much and I would be glad to sell it to you, and if I decide to put it on sale, you will be first in line. As for the price I don't think I can go under 70 euros, definitely not now while it's been only a few weeks since I finished it. I do like the painting a lot myself and sometimes artists value their pieces pretty high, but I feel like over 100 euros would be too much to ask.

But yeah, I'll try to remember to let you know if I'll sell it, and if I fail to do so remember I promised you the first dibs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SleepwalkerSerenade In reply to ShadeofShinon [2014-02-20 02:02:50 +0000 UTC]

$150 USD down promise. I will have it put into a sub-account at my bank and save it away hastily. I have a little girl on the way who is going to decimate my wallet, and Florida wages are atrocious. But I do what I can, so I will be saving. My offer isn't final, but definitely did currency translations, but roughly $130 is what I got from 100 euros. Honestly, my price is highly influenced by the size of the painting. Could I bother for the measurements?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to SleepwalkerSerenade [2014-02-20 15:02:31 +0000 UTC]

The conversion is about right, and 100 euros (136USD) is the most I could ask for it and most likely the final price is lower. I can completely understand that there are much more important things to spend the money on, life is so expensive. Which is also one of the reasons I'm seriously considering selling the painting.

Anyway, the painting is 6'' x 15,75'' (15cm x 40cm).

That sounds pretty tall. I'd love to hang it in my living room. I have an oriental themed common area. Lol. Whenever you're ready to sell, I'm ready to buy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShadeofShinon In reply to SleepwalkerSerenade [2014-02-21 11:22:43 +0000 UTC]

I think I'll sell it to you since you're so interested into buying it, your offer is really good and sounds like the painting would be a perfect addition to your living room (much better than my drawer anyway). Now I need to decide whether I should ask 90e or 100e for it since the shipping costs are going to be about 10 euros anyway and it also raises the total.

ShadeofShinon In reply to SleepwalkerSerenade [2014-02-24 13:24:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think it's the right choice for everyone. :>If 100+10 is too much I can include the shipping expenses in the price and make it 100e.

I'll probably visit the post office this week if I have time. If not, then the next week so if you can pay before that I can mail the painting to you at the same time. But no rush, I'm just trying to mail as many things at the same time so I don't need to run between my home and the post office all the time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SleepwalkerSerenade In reply to ShadeofShinon [2014-02-28 02:51:51 +0000 UTC]

I won't be able to buy it next week. Honestly, I am crunching money right now because I am looking for a new job, at least something that pays more than Florida minimum wage. But I REAAALLY want that piece, and I am willing to do what I can to muster the funds for it. I have NEVER bought an art piece before, and I don't want you to hold it forever. But if you have it by the time I gather my resources, I will gladly pay for it. Nothing extreme, but perhaps within the month. Honestly, the first paycheck I get would cover it, but I need to budget everything right because my baby girl is due in a month! D: I don't know what else to say.
