I'm glad you like it! I think my first inspiration was Hokusai but after going to an exhibition that showcased more Japanese ukiyo-e pieces I also discovered Hiroshige. I think he's an even bigger inspiration to me. I adore his work!

This is just lovely. I like this portrayal of ho-oh. Most of the time legendaries are portrayed as deadly or lordly, very often with a heavy emphasis on their power (except I guess mew et al) This picture though just has the bird serenely seated in a tree, almost looking like a bird of paradise. I love the gold sheen between the feathers. It along with the intricate details of the flowers reminds me of seeing pheasants in Botanical Gardens. Some of the birds there have a similar golden look. Also, I really love that mountain. So simple and elegant, it definitely captures the look of Japanese-style mountains. This bird is quite the splendid sight.Β

Thank you very much!
I agree with you about legendaries being represented as powerful creatures very often. Personally I've always seen Ho-Oh as a more serene and mystical legend rather than something that would go on a rampage and danger the world. Also, in Japanese art the themes are often more serene anyway, especially with birds. I recently bought an art book about mythical beasts in Japanese art and there are a lot of different kinds of pieces, from serene to more aggressive ones. I need to study it more and see if I can use what I'll learn in my future pieces.

Certainly one of the most beautiful PokΓ©mon ever. And the way you have represented it is just... Well, I think Japanese style is the one that suits it the best.

For real though, is this for sale? And if it is, could you send it to Florida?

If you mean the original I haven't really though about selling it. It's not like I'm absolutely not selling it but I'm rather fond of the piece so the price would be quite high. A print can be arranged and I can mail drawings or prints anywhere.

When you are ready to sell the original, if ever, I only ask for first dibs. Money is no item; I mean, I don't expect you'll make it outrageously priced, but original work is difficult to gauge value in, especially when the illustrator is attached to it. But those things come and go, and when it does, I want you to know I love it, and I would definitely be willing to pay for it.

The time when I'm completely ready to part from this painting might never come, just like with many other pictures I have sold. And yet I have sold them after all. Sometimes a good price makes it easier and sometimes I just know I can't have "maybe" as an option forever. I am glad to hear you like this painting so much and I would be glad to sell it to you, and if I decide to put it on sale, you will be first in line. As for the price I don't think I can go under 70 euros, definitely not now while it's been only a few weeks since I finished it. I do like the painting a lot myself and sometimes artists value their pieces pretty high, but I feel like over 100 euros would be too much to ask.
But yeah, I'll try to remember to let you know if I'll sell it, and if I fail to do so remember I promised you the first dibs.

The conversion is about right, and 100 euros (136USD) is the most I could ask for it and most likely the final price is lower. I can completely understand that there are much more important things to spend the money on, life is so expensive. Which is also one of the reasons I'm seriously considering selling the painting.
Anyway, the painting is 6'' x 15,75'' (15cm x 40cm).

I think I'll sell it to you since you're so interested into buying it, your offer is really good and sounds like the painting would be a perfect addition to your living room (much better than my drawer anyway). Now I need to decide whether I should ask 90e or 100e for it since the shipping costs are going to be about 10 euros anyway and it also raises the total.

It's alright, I can wait. I totally understand your situation and you don't need to rush at all. Whenever it's most convenient for you, let me know. I understand that you have more important things going on in your life atm. :>
