Description
After a quick travel, Krystal and Marina arrived at the doors at the side of the mountain and entered. Close to the entrance Krystal saw six statues depicting vixens in fighting poses.
“This is a strange place to put statues.”
Marina sighed. “Krystal, I think it’s time I tell you something: these are not statues.”
Krystal turned to her and raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“Cedric told you that the colony in this island was abandoned because it was cursed by Cassius Wildstorm. However, it was never explained what the curse was.”
Krystal let out a gasp, understanding what Marina was telling her.
“Are you saying these statues are actually people turned into stone by Cassius?”
Marina nodded. “Unfortunately, yes. If you remember, Richard once told Cedric that male orphans were raised in the militia. Obviously, there were also female orphans. These were made part of the guards that protected Prince Eric and Princess Holy, so they could be raised in a relatively safe environment. And that tradition comes from before them. Do you remember when Cedric told you about a healer named Aurora Snowgem?”
Krystal pondered for a minute before answering.
“Yes, I remember that name. She was with the princes and Adrius when they discovered this island by accident.”
“That’s right. She was an orphan raised in the Moonlight household. Actually, Princess Holy and Aurora became close friends and the princess often called Aurora her sister, since she didn’t have siblings. Her parents died when she was a child.”
“It is little known that, after finding the warp pad, the princes sent scouts to survey the island to see if they could find anything else. They found this underground complex. Perhaps it was made by the Krazoa Spirits, for some unknown reason.”
“Anyway, the princes decided to take advantage of this place. Alongside the settlers several workers came, to make new rooms and passages. The idea was to create an underground fortress that could house the settlers in case of a pirate attack.”
“Unfortunately, since magic was used to speed up the excavation, the Guardian Order supervised the construction of this place and that’s how Cassius Wildstorm learned about it, since he was a novice Guardian. He even helped to create a magic portal to connect the underground fortress with the mainland.”
“If you remember what Cedric told you about our history, this place was built when the Red Empire was getting back to normal after the war with the barbarian invaders. In that time, bandits appeared to take advantage of the lack of proper protection for caravans and trading ships. For that reason, Prince Eric and Princess Holy had to reinforce their outposts and create armed forces to protect their trade.”
“That means they were short of manpower and when a garrison for this fortress was needed, the only ones available were the orphaned vixens raised as guards in Princess Holy’s household. They named their most experienced fighter as commander and Aurora Snowgem became the healer and second in command.”
“When Cassius attacked, the commander rallied her forces while Aurora sent a message using the portal before coming to the aid of her friends.”
“Cassius’s plan was simple. Since these girls were raised in Princess Holy’s household, he knew the princess will rush to their aid, since she was close to them. He knew Prince Eric was summoned by his brother to talk about the future of the Red Empire. However, Adrius was with the princess when she received Aurora’s message and came with her. You know the rest: Cassius was defeated, his staff confiscated and he was exiled.”
“Princess Holy felt partially responsible for this, especially because her ‘sister’ Aurora was turned in to stone. It took time for her to recover from this ordeal. To avoid something like this to happen again, the settlers were ordered to return. And the existence of the subterranean fortress was kept a secret to avoid it to fell in the wrong hands and to make sure nobody learns how to use the same curse again. Only the Guardians know this secret. I hope you can forgive me for keeping it from you.”
Krystal smiled. “Don’t worry, Marina. I understand you. Let’s hurry now, since Holy can need our help!”
