"I just want this world to be peaceful again,"
They laughed. Trust Katara to want world peace.
"I just want that big piece of meat right now!" Sokka replied, staring at the cooking meat ravenously. This earned even more laughter.
Going around the circle, each person stated what they wanted; eventually it came to Toph and everyone looked at her in anticipation, but she didn't say a word.
"Toph? What do you want?" Katara urged her gently. She remained unmoving, staring blankly at the campfire in front of her.
"I don't know," she replied after some time. Someone snickered on one side, but she didn't move.
"Well… what do you want to do with your life?" Katara offered, trying to encourage the young girl to join the group discussion.
"I don't know," she replied again and immediately stood up.
"Toph - !" Katara called to her as the girl walked away.
"I'll go talk to her," Sokka said, beginning to stand up.
"No. I will," he said, surprising everyone.
He rolled his chair towards her fading figure in the shadows. The girl kept walking until she reached the edge.
"Why did you follow me?" she asked quietly, turning towards him as he came close to her.
"You don't want to talk to do you?" he asked, stopping a metre away from her, respecting her need to personal space. She just gave a wry smile and turned back towards the sky that was as dark as the sight she saw before her.
"Well, I'll stay with you until you're ready to talk," he stated matter-of-factly. She raised an eyebrow at him, puzzled by his actions.
"You're strange, Goggles," she said. He just smiled.

"Hey Goggles, can I talk to you?"
The boys around the campfire looked between the two curiously, a jeering smile on their lips.
"Sure," he replied, shooting them a look of disapproval as he rolled towards her. She made sure to send dirt at the campfire and make the flames jump towards them, causing them all cry out in fear.
"I'm ready to talk," she stated, as they reached one edge of the Western Air Temple. He smiled.
"I'm ready to listen," she smiled a bit before taking a deep breath and beginning.
"I don't know what I want to be, because I don't think I have the right to dream of the future when I can't even let go of the past," she said, all in one breath.
He kept looking at the sky for a moment and she stared where her feet were, waiting for his reply.
"If that's what you feel, then so be it," he said, surprising her, "but Toph, the past shapes who you are so that you CAN dream and live for the future."
They were silent for a moment, but then she turned to him, her pale green eyes visible in the moonlight.
"Guess I have to let go of the past then, don't I?" she gave a wry smile.
"Want to talk about it?" he asked.
"Will you be waiting anyway?"
"Yes"
She laughed and he smiled.
"Alright. I guess I better start from the beginning," she said, sitting down by the edge. He shifted slightly in his wheelchair as she began. "I was born in Ba Sing Se but didn't know the world beyond the family compounds..."
