The wind was freezing as the depths of winter gripped Great Bear Island, forming huge drifts among the abandoned buildings and empty roads. In Blackrock, outside the prison, it was particularly cold. Wolf howls carried on the wind.

The building had left it's door open for some time, a snowdrift spilling across the floor. White flakes blew in on the wind, circling around in the dark. Jace scowled. She didn't like to leave the powerplant where she'd been holed up for days, since she'd been left alone by the first lights in the sky. But she was looking for more food. Carrying twins meant that she needed a lot of it.

“Is there really nothing else?” She brushed at the snow flecked metal, only seeing cleaning chemicals or paint. There was nothing here… then she saw one, picking it up she brushed away the ice and held it up to look. “Dog’s Best Friend…. You’re kidding right” The astrophysicist muttered, narrowing her eyes in disbelief. The rest of the bare cupboard stared back at her. “Dog food… really?” She looked from the can to the massive mound of her stomach that looked fit to burst through the layers of clothing she’d arranged about it. “I can’t be that hungry…” Her gut gave a long, low growl like a wolf. She cringed as her maternal load squirmed, rubbing at the lining of her womb.. It had been more than a day. “…looks like I am” she muttered, fetching her can opener.

The first spoonful made her cringe. But the second didn't. And soon she had licked the can clean.

Another great reward by of one of my favourite characters from "The Long Dark". Jace the astrophysicist turned survivalist. This time she'd looking ready to pop and craving some unusual food!
