Description Okay, now this one was intended to have spot-on anatomy. I'm not so sure if that's the case, but I know I'm close! (Can you tell I've had a Friesian obsession lately?) My Andalusian and Arabian "studies" in my gallery are quite nasty compared to this one (I'll have to redo those some time). I'm happy to say that I'm quite proud of how this one came out. I tried to capture that "traditional" horse painting look as well as the beauty and power of Friesians--and such a beauty can be seen even if the horse is standing still. This would probably look a lot nicer as an oil painting, and I'll probably do that someday if I have the time. My scanner doesn't like to show how smooth this is in real life, apparently.

Mechanical pencil on sketchbook paper.

Thank you very much! Yes, I know they are usually curly, though I have seen some that aren't, so I'm modeling this drawing after those particular rarities. Maybe they used some sort of straightener? Haha.

Actually the bit about the straightener is true!, I own a friesian my self. and at championships, owners straighten the hair to make the mane and tail measure longer, with more chance to win! just a fact for you haha!

Haha, well what do ya know! Good to know for future drawings, though, that that is how they achieve that. Thanks for the info!

Wow..... In my opinion your drawing is very well and yes, I am agree with kizzychan, the reflection on the coat is really... wow^^
Friesian horses have some "curls" in their mane, but your straight variant looks amazing, too.

No refs? Great shape and reflections on the coat... wow.
I also used to draw horses without refs but I don't know if I could do reflections so nice as yours.

The only breed that can come next to the Arabian in my eyes..... Lovely. Going to see the stallion by the only Preferent pair of Friesians on earth yet again next weekend hopefully. Both his sire and dam passed in the last two years but Wyn De Pluum is still here.

I agree with that. Arabs are ultimately my favorite breed, but Friesians are second for sure. I've seen a few Friesian stallions in person, but none with fancy bloodlines, to my knowledge. Have fun seeing him!

Will do. I'll try to get some pictures. Wyning Edge Friesians is where he is in Boerne, TX. Owned by Paula Marsh. She is a super cool lady.

I love the traditional style and setup. It wouldn't look out of place hanging in some grand house! The anatomy is amazing for no ref - very classic friesian. I'm quite envious! The only points I would have are the foreleog closest to us being the tiniest bit over at the knee, but someone else did point that out. And that sort of thing is easily done because it can be so subtle that you don't notice. Also I wonder if the mane and tail would normally have a bit more texture and wave? I'm not 100percent sure, but most of the Friesians I've seen photos of have had either curly manes/tails or slightly wavy. Having said that, the long straight mane DOES look really nice! I love the shine to it

ShaleseSands In reply to AmandaDrage [2009-10-17 04:06:46 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you! Yes, I didn't notice that at all when I was making it, of course, but now that other people can see it, I most definitely notice. Well, actually, I've seen quite a few Friesians with straight manes like that (check out Anton 343--the most BEAUTIFUL Friesian ever!). Who knows? Maybe they use straighteners for manes like this? But I have seen a good chunk of Friesians with very wavy manes as well.

Absolutely brilliant! It really reminds me of the old paintings drawn of great horses.. that mane is to die for and the highlights are wonderful

Thankies!^^ That's kind of what I was going for, actually--the old style portraits or whatever. I've always wanted to paint something like that as well, but graphite was all the closer I managed to get thusfar.

the only thing I can find a little wrong is the front right leg is bent a little, but the horse could just be doing that so GREAT!
