Description In the battlefield, desperate, he manages to find Charles. Erik knows he himself is the one to blame for all of this. Yet Charles smiles weakly at him and a feeling of forgiveness tugs at his mind. And there, in the end of everything, Erik holds Charles and whispers:

"It wasn't worth it".

But Charles just isn't there to hear it anymore.

Erik/Charles from X-Men: First Class

Close Up on faces here:

I would love to write something accurate and prettier but I'm no writer. That's why I paint to express myself :/

If I don't do something angsty I think I die or something. Also, I can get back to WoW raiding. I couldn't until I finished this because my head didn't let me D:

Also this is dedicated to (AKA Loobeeinthesky) because she is amazing like that and also her art is . Happy birthday, hun!

Idea surged because of several things:

- My take on this cover just with XMFC.

- My love for PietΓ‘s :>

- "As if the world wasn't ending" by Sonata Arctica . I've always wanted to make something that goes along with this song...

- "I know him so well" (by John Barrowman) fanvideo . It was playing while I was drawing and me me go like *snif* This is kind of Charles part in my head while he is dying...

- Seeing the fantastic work by Loobeintesky that encouraged me further to continue with this when I got home...

- The X-Men: First Class fandom, which is full of great talent and always inspires me things.

- This scene from Civil War - The Confession. It's a scene I find it like, AMAZING. That's where the title is from.

Painting this was like... A HELL in some parts. Started with a lol-doodle in a scrap of paper. Then a partly figure in my sketchbook and then I scanned it and continued to work on this from Photoshop. Then decided not to take my usual route and started with greyscale tones only.

Fun and easy.

Then I began to apply colours and it was HELL.

Trying to figure out which layer blend modes use it's something I'm totally not accustomed to so in the first stage was like someone threw up a rainbow onto it (not that Purple/Red Magneto's colours hepled a lot :/). I can't tell how many things were made and unmade until I got they right colours, and then used the right adjustment layers and then... well, it had to end sometime so I consciously put an end to it xD And this is the result that happened. Colours are a bit odd for what I'm used to but I'm pleased enough... I think.

Hope you like anyway

Also, soon, some step by step...

PS: I would be using this method some more because I'm a masochist I'd like to get better results and it's interesting at the least...

Credits:

- Barren texture from ~hhh316
- Pencils from *sandara , *algenpfleger , *nathie , ~spiritsighs-stock and some of my own.
- Also several tutorials from here , here , here and here .
All were very insightful, but, as they say in most of them this colouring method ends in "using what you most feel it needs".

Holy.... All of our drawing gets to me. It's so beautiful and everytime I look a that piece (or all of the other) it touches me, it makes me cry (or laugh on other arts). You are so very talented. I wish I add only 1% of your talent ! Thank you so much and I'll look forward for more beautiful art !

It's only on such a rare occasion that a picture can manage to bring tears to my eyes, and this certainly did. God, I wish I could even manage a smidgen of the beauty of this because this just really did tug at my heart and made me hope the highest of hopes beyond canon (and the text did help yeah)

I have to agree with all the comments above.
This is seriously a beautiful piece of work.
As several mentioned above, I love how Erik's torn cape looks like an angel wing. Like in the end, by seeing his mistake and regretting it, he found salvation, maybe even given by Charles when he forgives him?
And the wheelchair and the helmet in the background ... I first didn't even notice them, but this subtle detail ... it is amazing!
Don't worry about your coloring, you did an amazing job.

And I have to admit ... the pic alone made me swallow.
But when I read those lines, especially the last sentence, it honestly made me cry. And I hardly cry at all.
This is so heartbreaking ... I ... I have no further words.

Shaliara In reply to AngelElleth [2012-01-28 01:08:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you lots!!

The wing was unnintentional at first but I decided to leave it that way when I noticed it.

Actually in my head (I play the entire story like some video when I draw ) he does find redemption but... at this high price: he is alone

Oh, do not cry ;A; I love angst and, well, I'm so glad that people got moved by this. I actually cried too while drawing and listening to the song... ;A;

Thanks a lot for the kind comment!

You seriously just made me cry. The painting is absolutely gorgeous, and the story short as it is, is heart breaking. All the work put into this really pays off. I don't know if you intended this, but Erik's cape sort of looks like an angel's wing, which makes it even more sad. Beautiful work...just beautiful!

Oh, don't cry ;A; My imagination is an angst cave sometimes and I come with stuff like this. I'm glad you liked! Acttually when listening to that song and all that while drawing I almost cried too... D:

And yep, the wing thing... started out as something unnintentional but when I noticed it I left it that way

I think your use of colours is fantastic and really brings the right mood to the artwork. Erik's cape alone - even apart from the fact that it is all torn up, the grey leeched colour makes the whole thing look so much more desolate. I love the symbolism in the back with the chair and the helmet- but you've done it without it looking like blantant symbolism. It looks real, like part of the scene/story. The smoky/dusty look that the background has with the (setting?) sun - the same look that a battlefeild has after everything's finished, which also adds to the reality and fits in with the written part you've got there.
All in all, I LOVE IT. Every single part! If I get time I hope to write a fic for this, it's just so heartbreakingly wonderfull!
