I like the way you think, and redoing a painting like this does indeed teach the artist something. I also did a version of a pinup drawing based on this Elvgren painting. you can find it here:

Not quite the same as what you've done, but I hope you like it anyway. Haven't quite plucked the nerve up yet to colour my work like you've done.. getting there though.

Your technique is a proven one, and explains a lot about your skill--just copying the work of an artist (or writer!) you like teaches you how it's done--then you do your own thing. I had a 'Policeman's Gazette' flashback, looking at this one.

Elvgren is great to study because he was so good at light and naturalism yet his work was always a bit above that. He did an almost heightened kind of surrealism. In retrospect on this piece, I wish had done less with heavy blacks and feathering on her legs and right arm. I think a lighter (but shaped holding) line would have worked better. This is actually an older piece (from last winter -I think?). I feel like I'm getting closer on the new horror stuff I'm doing.
