My friends and I decided to try out 4E D&D recently, which started out as a normal D&D game until we decided we wanted to be an adventuring company gouging our clients as much as we can get away with and wearing three-piece Suits of Armour to every job, so it sort of turned into a different game that we dubbed Contracts & Conmen.
actoratheart played the dragonborn wizard Rhaegon, who started and mostly runs the company; Skwinky played the eladrin rogue Fintan, the master assassin who also handles our finances and... uh... supplements our income, and I played tiefling warlock Azarel, our legal advisor (he's good at contracts). Our friend Alan was the DM!
So uh... I drew some silly comics based on our last adventure!

Certainly makes me want to listen to full recordings - alas, that is unlikely to happen.
And that's high praise from me: I've already listened to several hundred hours of DnD recordings (on top of my own gaming) so it takes a rather unique take on the game to make me want to listen to more.

But yeah, I'm pretty sure most of my friends would be a little self-conscious about recording themselves for internet distribution, but I really enjoy making comics about it. *u* If we play with these characters again, I'll have to consider doing more comics! xD

NO THAT'S THE THING -- HE BROUGHT THE DOLL FOR THAT PURPOSE. xD He had planned for the final boss to be a giant screaming wrath-baby (he described it as an infant god, "a god-toddler, or, goddler, if you will"), and so in the little map where we move tokens around to show where our characters are standing in a fight, he set down this BABY DOLL to be the token for that giant baby. xD IT WAS HILARIOUS AND STRANGE.Β

Depends on who you're playing with! c: Some people will enjoy that and some people won't! When we started the Contracts & Conmen game, we all agreed we wanted it our game to feel like the Ghostbusters movies -- to have some adventure and monsters and heroics and stuff but be fun and funny too!
But I've played in a more serious game where the DM threw in some modern-day stuff and some of the players didn't enjoy it, because they couldn't take it seriously and they didn't want to play a sillier game.
I think the trick is to know who you're playing with and, if you can, bring it up with the group to make sure everyone's cool with the idea! If you wanna try out D&D but you wanna figure out how to put a ray gun in there, tell the people you're playing with and see if they're into it! :"D
(Though if you want some sci-fi in your D&D, the tabletop version of Shadowrun might be right up your alley!)

But yeah no, if you play a warlock in D&D, it basically means your character made a deal with some powerful being in exchange for magical powers. You get to pick whether you want to make a deal with the devil, a deal with faeries, or a deal with the cosmos. I picked the last one but made it very clear that I was not so much interested in the stars as I was the HORRIFYING LOVECRAFTIAN ENTITIES BEYOND THE STARS xD

Though I will let you know, now that there's a new edition out (people call it 5e but the company is just calling it Dungeons & Dragons, like it's a reboot or something), you might be able to get some other friends who've never played together to try it out! They sell a Starter Set ( dnd.wizards.com/products/table⦠) that has a book of basic rules, some pre-made characters, and a quick adventure so that you can try out and figure out the game without having to make your own adventure just yet. I didn't buy it but some friends have -- I'm told it still takes some figurin' you're new to the game, but it might be a simpler starting place! ;u;
