You can order a DVD set of Gilligan's Planet at CBS Digital

I did some Gilligan action figure built out of GI Joe figures back in the 90s. Won some awards. Gilligan's Planet was a big influence. I called it "Gilligan 2099"

I got the DVD of this series for Xmas

Some asshole on DA is bashing this cartoon on youtube. I don't see what the problem is. Aside from the sci-fi setting and the inclusion of bumper, it's pretty much every bit a Gilligan show as the originalΒ  and New Adventures were.

- Comically Blown attempts at rescue. (A fair amount is actually not Gilligan's fault)
- One ep had a dream sequence.
- Visitors who come and go without helping them
- Random crap arrives on the planet.
- Castaways have somehow managed to drag a lot of random crap from Earth in that tiny ship themselves
- Headhunters are replaced with aliens

Mr Howell is a bit more of a scheming jerk and the Professor tends to technobabble more than before and the science is at best implausible. Sometimes a lesson is learned by a Castaway, but it's not as heavy handed as other Filmation shows. Mr Howell's alliterative insults to Bumper are amusing.

It features the usual Filmation stock sound effects (Notably that one rocket firing sound) and it's stable of actors

But all in all it's slavishly loyal to all the elements that fans love about the original show. I recommend it highly

oh yeah, i remember most of that when I watched the cartoon as a kid (faithfully I might add).

Yeah idiot on youtube that doesn't know the era and quite possibly wasn't born in the 70s or 80s and thus has zero clue or even context.

I really should get my hands on the dvds.

I liked that even Skipper and Ginger were shown to be assholes on a couple of occasion in addition to Mr Howell. But at least they own up to their screwups in the end

It's a premise that Id love to see revisited. But I dont know if any modern animation studio could do it justice, even if they COULD find voice actors who could do exemplary imitations of the cast (Like Maurice Lamarche could do with Inspector Gadget)

I rather enjoyed the cartoons of the 80s based on live action programs. Taking beloved characters and broadening the scope of their adventures in ways conventionalΒ  TV programs just don't have the budget for.Β  Although the added in cutesy sidekick could be annoying.

But at least Bumper made more sense being an alien rather than some animal that could somehow walk on two legs and talk. I even liked him better than Stubby the Monkey from the original cartoon

ShebaKoby In reply to Dr-Syn [2015-01-14 01:44:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah, though maybe marvel animation studios could.Β  or Tokyo Movie Shinsa.Β  Or Warner Bros.Β  Maybe Toei, they did a beautiful job of redoing Sailor Moon (Crystal).

Maurice Lamarche is still voice acting.Β  I'm not sure who he could do in the cast if anyone, (maybe the professor?) but I know Michael McConnohie (Tracks on Transformers, whose voice incidentally was based on Thurston Howell III) could easily mimic Mr. Howell.Β  Maybe Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway) as Ginger.Β  Maybe Michael Bell or Frank Welker as Gilligan.Β  Frank Welker could probably handle Skipper's voice.Β  Maybe Tara Strong as Mary Ann.Β  Lovey Howell's voice might be harder to pin down, and I'd suggest Betty White if she had the range for it.Β  Maybe Diana Muldaur.

I wish Erika Scheimer would find a way to reconstitute Filmation Associates somehow.Β  Annoying Cute Sidekick seemed to be a necessity on many 70s and 80s cartoons.Β  It was a Filmation Staple all through its run.Β  Bat-Mite, Orko, Kowl, Deputy Fuzz (from Bravestarr), Belfry from Filmation Ghostbusters...

Yeah Stubby i had less memory of than Bumper, cuz the lil dino-alien was waaaaaaaaay cuter.

I imagine regular voice actors might be sufficient

Although Dawn Wells herself might be able to pull off Mary Ann, Ginger and Mrs Howell if her voice is still in shape

Indeed, though Filmation went defunct after they got bought out in the early 90s (*fistshakes at L'Oreal Cosmetics!*)

Oh, I wasn't aware that Filmation was bought out. Even so Lou Scheimer did a lot of great work in his day. I still love all the old 80s cartoons.

(aka the first thing L'Oreal did once they got their hands on it was close it up and give everybody their pink slips)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

ShebaKoby In reply to CosmicFalcon-70 [2013-10-20 08:55:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, whoever was running L'Oreal at the time had no interest in preserving the studio or even making it better.Β  All they wanted was a tax write-off.Β  The last thing that Filmation ever officially put out was Happily Ever After, a movie.

Oh what could have been...
