There was never going to be a second season. Gainax set up the ending of the last episode that way as a satire of how they always leave their works on an ambiguous note.

Oh, good. Because the show's basic premise is these two "fallen angel" sisters who are absolute sluts live in a city haunted by demons. Ordered around by their boss, a black Catholic priest (who's a pedophile, by the way), they have to kill the demons and earn their right back in Heaven. And that's just the BASIC premise. It gets crazier in later episodes... MUCH crazier...
