Description About half way through the dump of official Battletech lineart now.
This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.

Not one of my favorites, previously or in this new result, but here's the Phoenix Hawk.
Some of the oldies are hard to make pretty without changing it beyond recognition. This viewing angle isn't the most flattering either. It definitely looks nicer in 3D / as a sculpt. Hope I can show that some day.

Well, I for one love it. The Phoenix Hawk was always on of my favorite mechs. Any chance of giving the Crusader a makeover?

I thought it would be cooler from its description in Decision at Thunder Rift. For a commander unit it feels kinda lame

Of all the redesigns, I think this is the only time MWO did it better. But not by much.
I eagerly await a day when I can buy some of these.

My personal favorite take on the Phoenix Hawk is the TRO Project Phoenix version.

But that is purely individual taste.

The MWO version came out great in regards to the torso design, the head isnΒ΄t that nice looking IMO.

Good old P-Hawk... you are right, while I liked the specs (to say nothing of the LAM configuration ^^) I never really liked the look. Those oversized 'jet packs' simply ruin it. I think you did helped it as much as possible while keeping it recognizable.

Sadly there's no point redesigning a mech if it no longer resembles the original, when BT has so many covering so many looks. We do what we can

It looks cool, although keeping the droppable laser would be nice

This angle desfinitely doesn't show off the legs well. They're a bit more chunky in 3D.

I'm torn about this one, i really like what you did with the head and jump jets but the same time i like the version Alexander Iglesias (flyingdrebris) made for MWO, i really can't decide here.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to erdervv [2017-11-28 19:47:36 +0000 UTC]

The MWO one is more visually appealing I think, but does so by not looking as much like a phoenix hawk lol.

And your looks a lot more like a walking tank, and that's exactly what mechs are in BT, rugged machines made for war and war only.

Well, unlike with the Stinger, here i am really glad you didn't go with the more iconic bubble head it used to have in older artwork.
This pointy, more beak-like look is much more pleasing and fits better with the rest of the angular design of it.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to stormeris [2017-11-28 19:44:25 +0000 UTC]

There was the option for an overall more curvy version, but the higher-ups wanted more angles.

Streaked-Silver [2017-11-28 08:56:33 +0000 UTC]

Honestly it did need a whole rework though. The Veratech did not transfer well to BT and this makes them look like their own thing. Grand job I say.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Streaked-Silver [2017-11-28 19:43:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The main thing was abandoning the remaining look of it being a jet fuselage. Looks goofy unless it's got the excuse of being a jet lol.

I kinda miss the handheld gun aesthetic that the original Macross model had, but otherwise it certainly carries the classic feel without the legal ramifications

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shimmering-Sword In reply to ShadowRaven2006 [2017-11-28 19:42:32 +0000 UTC]

Couldn't go too deep with the handheld look, though this one does still have a weapon that could be jetissonable. Similar to the one on the Battlemaster, it has a guard in front of the mechs hand, so it's still being "held" in a way.

I got to use an original PXH-1 in a withdrawal campaign couple years back.Β  Stock succession war era Phoenix Hawk, Hunchback "Swayback", a Whitworth, and Catapult.Β  No ammo refills, no resupplies, no armor repairs, just evade Davion forces and make it to the evac point far far far away.Β  Good god did that Phoenix Hawk Large Laser come in real handy when the LRM bins went dry.

Arguably the best version of the Phoenix Hawk I have seen. Love the head is more hawk like.

Heretic1311 [2017-11-27 22:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Now that is a very nice take on the Phoenix Hawk.
You kept the quad antenna, but the head looks much more intimidating than the original from Macross.
In fact it somehow reminds me of a Clint version, but that can be just me.
The backpack elements which are so characteristic for the PHawk look great, and the way you drew it makes it look both fast and agile.

Individual tastes
Thing is, those are pretty much iconic to this, in itself, iconic mech.
I really like the Project Phoenix variant, if you are familiar with it.
Especially the head. But even on that interpretation, they included the big boosters on the back.
