That under lighting trick has got to be hard. I mean, trying to make it look like light is shinning through thin flesh... I have yet to attempt it.

It's actually so simple and easy that i squeel every time i get to use it. you just gotta get the brightest red you can (or it'll be too unsaturated) and just lightly dollop it on. very gently. you dont even have to aim it very well since it's an ambient light anyway. usually after i got my red on there i put just an eentsy bit of orange in the intense spots and voila.
It's a bit more difficult if you're using traditional media. . .

Hmmm . . . it may be, but that gives me a bit of an idea. Now I just gotta put it into practice - at least once I find the right test subject - and then try to do the same tactic on feathered wings. The shadows and ambient lighting on that is going to be TWICE as difficult. LOOTS of different surface areas and shapes and textures to color.
Still, I'll just start out with my brightest red and go down from there.

Feathered wings are definitely difficult but it's great to challenge yourself. I'd suggest not using red for feathered wings because the main cause of red would be blood under the skin. Feathers usually have very neutral underlighting

Sorry I'm replying late, but I may have to try a more neutral colored wing first. So the suggestion is helpful as I am severely out of practice with a lot of things. However, I do have some characters that have a natural red pigment in their wings. So trying to find a way to produce light and shadow that way will be a challenge. However, if I could somehow get a working model . . . But we'll see!

I wish I could say I was. I've been hit with something that litteraly has knocked me on my but pretty hard. I've been getting these attacks of pain in my abdomen, one was so sever I passed out at the Fedex. The last year has been non stop doctor appointments, but no idea what is causing it yet.

It's hard to give advice on those things! I guess my best advice is that they are never perfect. Scales and Fur look best with a bit of irregularity or damage (:
