I know nothing much about Puppet and know he doesnt really have a name so it highly called just Puppet. i do as well or Jack Marionette since he's a Marionette Jack-in-the-box. Makes sense.-SPOILER-
I do know about those special minigames, one being a kid being left outside crying watching everyone have fun. A car comes along a guy gets out and what seems kills the child, the kid changes to what seems like Puppet and the game ends with Puppet attacking.
So I had this feeling of a scared boy always left out [being held back], but urge of free-will drives him insane to be part of the fun.
Similar to the being held back with the music box, but once it stops he's free to move about and come after you.
As a child possibly the parents didnt allow him to have fun and restricted many things.
Some theories saying about the murderer being connected to the puppet. Which could be possible. Maybe the murderer was the one who never had fun as a kid, and seeing all the kids having so much fun drove him mad to killing them *shrugs*

My theory not much that marionette being the one behind it but part of the thing he was played into a bigger plan that's literally seems like a screw up. He Wants Revenge To the killer and Forced Those Kids To A Second Chance To Avenge their deaths. But the killer seemed a step ahead altering the ai so they can't have free will. Cool right?

Looks can be decieveing. Yeah there's pity to backstory. But what you're dealing with can be a whole other story. I had a night of marionette curse and I'm not joking either, I wrote a journal about it.
