Description

Inktober Returns !!!!!! Day 10 (super late): Spinosaurus’s existential crisis.

New studies seem to undermine Ibrahim’s recent reconstruction of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, by assessing that Sigilmassasaurus is not synonymus with Sp. Aegyptiacus and should not be used for the reconstruction of the neotype. Further analysis shows that they were at least two separate spinosaurid species in the Kem Kem formation. Spinosaurus’s quest to find its identity seems to be far from over.

Poor ol’ Spinosaurus. Looks like he can’t take a break.

Update: Good Quality Scan ! Also, we may have buried the short-legged Spinosaurus too soon. For further information, go see

In tootsie pop narrator voice "What did Spinosaurus Aegypticus really look like? The world may never know."

You're most welcome. ^^ I really hope we will decipher the Spinosaurus
mystery one day.

Forget gender identity, species identity is a real social problem!

Indeed ! XD Well they are different cases all together but it is true one of the recent emphasis
of paleontology those last few years is how we decide wether this is a species or a complex of species.
Let's hope we will find out more about Spinosaurus and relieve it from its burden. ^^

I agree, the dinosaur seems to have gotten more mysterious

You're a monster... A true monster !! (Joke here )

On the other hand it actually does look like a dragon !

Hahahahahaaa ! XD

Paleontology is, like every scientific discipline, an ever-learning field
and our understanding of things change regularly with new discoveries and studies.

Spinosaurus's case is not that unique but the recent studies on it put a lot of public scrutiny on it.

And as for dragons, well it was fossils of dinosaurs that partially inspired some cultures to imagine
dragons. So your comment is quite fitting.

Thanks a lot; well dino bones definitely inspired the Chinese lung dragons & western dragons along with other motivations like historically documented titan sized crocodiles; like 8-10 meters Nile crocodiles or myths about 12m amazon alligators\crocodiles.
Humans surely like imagining

Hehe, that's what we do best. ^^
And to be fair, there is still a great dose of imagination in paleontology.
The difference is that our imagination is better informed. ^^

Indeed

I'm still surprised by the fact; we still discover gigantic enormous dinosaur species...
I wonder what's next ?

What a time to be alive. I hope we find out what kind of legs Spinosaurus truly had.

ShinRedDear In reply to ZekromChris [2015-11-07 02:22:54 +0000 UTC]

indeed ! Well, the funny thing is that this new Sigilmassasaurus isn't as solid
as we may have thought and even if Sigilmassasaurus is its own genus, the short-legged Spinosaurus
is still a possiblity. In fact, there is no strong evidence of a longed-legged one if we are honest with the
material at hand. Still, the debate and search for spino's true form is far from over. Thank you for your interest
and your comment.

So, does this mean the previous, Pre-"Spinosaurus Revolution" reconstruction is the right one to use for now? Long Hindlegs and Curved Sail and everything?

SpinoInWonderland In reply to MatthewOnArt [2015-10-24 17:49:41 +0000 UTC]

Not necessarily. You could still use Sigilmassasaurus to fill in gaps in Spinosaurus.

The pre-2014 reconstructions used baryonychines such as Suchomimus to reconstruct it's body.

ShinRedDear In reply to MatthewOnArt [2015-10-24 07:32:59 +0000 UTC]

Maybe but maybe not. The case is far from being resolved. We still have to wait
for a monograph of the proposed neotype by Ibrahim and Co. So I would be cautious
when chosing a reconstruction for Spinosaurus. Where we are now, everything's on the table
and Spinosaurus is once again multiple choice. We will have to wait for further studies and more importantly
new remains to have some sort of conclusion. But nothing stops you from reconstructing Spinosaurus with
long hindlimbs. ^^

Can you explain this in more detail? I'm interested. I'm aware of Ibrahim's study of course, but for some reason don't remember Sigilmassasaurus being mentioned. (Then again, admittedly I didn't read it in detail...)

ShinRedDear In reply to Nazrindi [2015-10-24 05:40:06 +0000 UTC]

No prob ! ^^ To make things short and simple, a new study compared the Sigilmassasaurus holotype
(cervical vertebrae) with other spinosaurid specimens. Their conclusions are that 1: Spinosaurus marocanus
is a junior synonym of Sigilmassasaurus and 2: Sigilmassasaurus is not synonymous with Spinosaurus aegyptiacus,
contrary to what Ibrahim et al. thought (they used multiple specimens for their reconstruction, including Sigilmassasaurus
for the neck bones). I hope it's clearer now.

Oh, very interesting indeed. This just makes the whole Spinosaurus issue even more confusing. I really hope they find more definitive fossils of it in the future.

ShinRedDear In reply to Nazrindi [2015-11-04 22:09:44 +0000 UTC]

The new Sigilmassasaurus paper isn't completely free of criticism and I think
that we should wait for Ibrahim's monograph and as you say, more fossils, to
have a bit of certainty in the matter of Spino's appearence. But the short-legged
neotype might not be as unlikely as some would like it to be. But yeah, that's still
quite confusing ! XD Thanks for your comment.

Nazrindi In reply to ShinRedDear [2015-11-08 01:48:07 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome!

This makes a really, really strong case for Spinosaurus being short-legged, though:
antediluviansalad.blogspot.com…
(I didn't read the hippo part, as I'm not interested in that, but basically it says that the histology of both the limb and vertebral elements point to a subadult specimen...meaning that the small pelvis and the short limbs/ long body *do* match up. )

No, it's me ! I wasn't clear enough. ^^
This is a very interesting debate and I think Duane Nash and his blog
contribute to give some perspective on the whole case and avoid sensionalism.
