Description Finally got this done. This may very well be the last piece of fanart you see from me for a while. I liked Gurren Lagann and tried to do my best take on the series. I tried some new methods with this one.

BTW, I found the nebula and earth pictures on some wallpaper forums. Hope I didn't piss anybody off with that, I hope you didn't think I took them myself from orbit.

I ended up watching this series a few months ago. I'm not really keen on the battle-mech type series, but I don't regret watching it.

Gotta feel sorry for Yoko though. Everyone romancing her ends up dead within hours.

My favorite character by far is Viral. The way his character growth is handled is just outstanding.

Yeah, its a pretty cool show. Definitely epic at the end. I know what you mean about Yoko. Talk about a kiss of death.

I was pretty pleased with how the background turned out. I tried to be true to the message of the show.

Its about exceeding your limits and reaching for the stars. In a very literal sort of way.

Haha okay, sounds funny , though I heard it was about mecha and such, wich is not my cup of tea unfortunatly

It got voted the quintessential mecha anime. Might not be your cup of tea then.

Some of those lines are pretty shaky looking, especially the kid's closest hand. Honestly this piece looks like you rushed it a bit, there are a bunch of little things that you usually handle better. I'm not saying this is bad at all but a lot of your newer work looks more polished than this imho.

It was rushed, I'm under a deadline for the con and didn't have time to spend 8 hours making sure my inks were ultra perfect. I'm pretty sick of how crappy my inks look like in photoshop and how much time I spend fixing them. Don't know why they look so jagged all the time. Any tips are greatly appreciated. I liked inking in manga studio a lot better but it doesn't seem to play well at all with my tablet. Maybe I'll take a few extra min to clean up the inks around the hands a bit. I did try to add a lot more line variation in this piece. I'm getting close to going back to inking by hand. Does everybody else go through this crap with inking?

Yeah, I think everyone goes through the frustration with inking, I know I did. I know a number of people who ink in illustrator now, though I found that to be a huge pain in the butt.

You can quick smooth out jaggies by using channels.
Just select the inks then make a new channel and delete so the ink lines are white. I use gaussian blur and then levels to sharpen the lines back up. (You can use curves also, but it's a bit more complicated) You can repeat the process several times to smooth everything out even more. I then load the channel as a selection and fill on a new layer to replace the ink layer.

It takes a little playing around with and you have to be careful if you have thin lines but it does work pretty well. That's the fastest way i know off hand.

Do you know of any good step by step tutorials using this method? I can use the pen tool as I do with technical things or long curves such as yoko's hair and gun. I like to ink with the tablet though, it feels more natural. I'll look into this method though, its a major stumbling block for my art and I'm anxious for a way past it.

Here's the basic idea:

I'm assuming that your lineart is on a separate layer, that makes things much easier. Like I said, you have to play around with the settings a bit as thin lines can get lost if you aren't careful.

I was thinking that you may want to check that your default spacing in the brushes palette is at 1%. If not you will also get a jagged line. Most brushes start at 10% and that might be your problem right there. If you are running on an older computer setting the spacing to %1 may cause some lag but any newer decent rig ought to be able to handle it.

This would have looked sooo much better if you didn't cut off their feet like that XP Other than that, it's a cool pic.

shiroboi In reply to OgawaBurukku [2010-07-15 12:26:52 +0000 UTC]

Its a terrible habit of mine. Do you think it would look better if I cropped off more? Or should I go back and try to draw in feet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OgawaBurukku In reply to shiroboi [2010-07-16 01:18:45 +0000 UTC]

I think feet would be better than cropping it off more. Since they are in space (or at least, that's the background), showing their feet would give them more of a floating effect. I think cropping them off any higher would take away the sense of movement in the pic.

I'll see if I can squeeze in the time to do this. I need to submit this for printing very very soon though. Thanks.
