Foxes of Sol and Luna Chapter 1Foxes of Sol & LunaChapter 1The early morning sun rose up from the earth, awakening the sleeping creatures.Birds singing their songs, squirrels chattering away, and hidden in a den buried under the soil were three squabbling fox kits. “Momma can we go out yet?” One whined.“Get off of my tail Graizer!” Another yowled.“Sorry Sylvia,” the kit called Graizer apologized to his sister.“Would you kits calm down?” their mother instructed. “We’ll get out of this den soon, once I’ve checked.” “Checked for what?” Her kit Sylvia interrupted. “Other foxes?” She gasped.“Other foxes? Like dangerous reynards!” The third kit named Ivory squeaked in fear.“Once I’ve checked to see if it’s safe.” Their mother finished stepping over her kits to the den entrance. She poked her head out and sniffed the air thoroughly before squeezing her way out. Her three kits sat impatiently in the den. “What if she sees a reynard?!” Ivory panicked.“I see a reynard!” Her sister Sylvia joked. “Where?!” Ivory jumped. “Right there!” Sylvia pointed her paw toward their brother, Graizer.“Hey! Sure I’m a reynard, but I’m not dangerous!” Graizer barked. “You vixens can be just as dangerous as a reynard.” He finished matter-of-factly.“Sure we can,” Sylvia rolled her eyes, unconvinced.“You kits are so loud.” Their mother poked her head back into the den. “Can we go out?” Graizer asked. “Yes, it’s clear. You kits probably scared everything away from how loud you are.” The kits made their way out of the den, following their mother. The den was surrounded by many bushes and a few large trees hiding it. There was a small clearing outside the den where the kits played. “Graizer let’s play!” Sylvia wagged her tail excitedly to her brother. “Yeah, okay!” Graizer went after his sister. The two geckered happily as they rustled in the grass. Ivory stayed close to her mother basking in the sun spots. “Why don’t you play with your littermates?” Her mother asked. “They always want to play something that involves wrestling. They never want to do what I want.” Ivory sighed.Ivory was almost a complete copy of her mother, Rosaline, for they both had bright orange pelts, white bellies, and rusty paws. “And what is it that you want to do?” Her mother questioned Ivory. “Well,” Ivory thought for a second. “I like it when you tell us stories. Especially ones of Sol and Luna!” She yipped, tail wagging. Her mother grinned warmly at her kit. “Why don’t I tell you kits one now?”“That would be great!” Ivory squealed. “Huh? Tell us what?” Graizer asked as he wrestled on top of Sylvia.“What’s going on Graizer? And can you get off of me!” Sylvia struggled.Graizer stepped off and the two ran over to their mother to hear what she had to say. “Well, I’m going to tell you kits a story, one you haven't heard before.” Ivory got excited at this, her tail viscously lashing back and forth. Sylvia, on the other hand, was grumbling, and battered Ivory’s tail down. “Do we have to listen to the story?” complained Sylvia. “No you don't have to,” Their mother Rosaline sighed. “I wanna hear it!” Graizer barked excitedly. He looked over to his sister. “We can play more after, okay Sylvia?” She just rolled her eyes at him. “You can be such a grumpy squirrel,” Ivory barked at Sylvia. “Okay, can you tell us the story now mama?” Ivory perked up, tail lashing once again.Rosaline chuckled warmly. “Of course.” The kits huddled close, eager to listen, all but Sylvia who continued to grumble. “Now before I begin, you kits understand what I mean by Foxes of Sol and the Foxes of Luna, right?” Rosaline asked.Graizer and Ivory shared a look. Suddenly Ivory yipped “Foxes of Sol and Foxes of Luna are the names of the two fox packs, right? And you, mama, are a Fox of Luna, and one day I can be a Fox of Luna too!” Ivory smiled up at her mother.“Yes that's right dear,” Rosaline grinned. “But what else do you know? And what about Foxes of Sol? Why don't you tell me Graizer.” He thought for a moment before he suddenly leapt up “Foxes of Sol is the other pack and they… They and the Foxes of Luna both share some traditions like… They both have leaders called “Watchers” like… MoonWatcher and SunWatcher, and the guardians protect their Watchers and the pack… And the uhhh…” Graizer trailed off before Ivory’s sudden interruption.“The guardians are called Sun and Moon Guardians, Sun Guardians protect The Land of Sol and Moon Guardians protect The Land of Luna, but both protect The Forest Between which is the forest we live in, shared by both Foxes of Sol and Luna!” Ivory exclaimed proudly.“That is all right! You’re very smart, the two of you are.” Rosaline praised. “Can you get to the story already?” groaned Sylvia. “I’m just making sure you kits understand the two packs.” Rosaline began, “Now for the story…”Ivory squealed in excitement, in which Sylvia groaned. “Many seasons ago, a young vixen was wandering the forest,” Rosaline began. “She gratefully enjoyed the flowers in full bloom and the bright green grass that the sun shimmered down on. It was a relief from the cold season of snow that has now passed. She went to sniff a flower while taking in the sweet scent and she noticed something walking toward her. Something unusual.”Ivory’s face lit up, “You mean it was?” she began.“Hush! Let momma finish!” Grazier yapped.Rosaline chuckled and continued with the story. “It was a pure white fox that came up to the young vixen and said to her: “Rylia, I must go, please watch over them.” “What? What do you mean?” The vixen questioned. The white fox answered. “I must go, my time here has been fulfilled, it is you I trust to care for them. You will lead them, you will be their MoonWatcher.” The vixen didn't know what to think, “Luna?” she called, “Luna where are you going? Luna?!” She was gone, the white fox truly left. The founder of Foxes of Luna had left, Rylia Fallendove was our first Moonwatcher after Luna left.”“Woah,” Ivory gasped.”Why did Luna leave her own pack? I mean she founded it!”“Sadly it is unknown her reasonings, MoonWatcher Rylia hoped she’d return someday but many generations later Luna is still gone.” “Story’s over, let’s play!” Sylvia wagged her tail to Graizer.“Yeah, alright!” Graizer leapt away followed by Sylvia. The two rustled around, geckering in enjoyment. Rosaline layed on her side soaking in the sun. Ivory, copying her mother, did the same. “Was Rylia a guardian?” Ivory asked.“Yes she was, to be a Watcher you must be a guardian first.”“Hm,” Ivory thought for a moment. “What about Sol? Didn’t he leave like that?”Rosaline nodded. “He did, and he hasn’t returned either.”“So the packs are separate, but they work together?” Ivory wondered.“Yes. Remember when your father told you why he’s always off on patrols?” Rosaline started, “It’s the foxes of Sol’s job to protect not just their land but the forest between.”“Oh wow, being a fox of Sol seems very important.” Ivory exclaimed.Sylvia and Graizer played for as long as they could until getting tired and deciding to rest with their mother and sister. What was supposed to be a little rest turned into a long afternoon nap. Ivory woke up to see her mother had left, she looked around the densite but there was no sight of Rosaline anywhere. Graizer and Sylvia laid in front of Ivory as they were still asleep. Ivory snuck past them and began to sniff around for her mother. She caught a whiff of her mother's sweet scent, she followed it past the bushes surrounding the den and found Rosaline speaking softly to a fox. It wasn't just any fox it was Ivory’s… “Father!” She barked happily running toward him. “Hey, Ivory!” Her father stood up to embrace his daughter, nudging her close. The two’s tails wagging vigorously. Henley was gray with a few splotches of orange and a white belly, his kits, Sylvia and Graizer, both shared their father’s coat colors.“Are your littermates still asleep?” Rosaline asked her daughter.“Yeah, Grazier was snoring,” Ivory giggled.“Well your father has brought some prey for you kits.” Picking up a half eaten rabbit, Rosaline made her way toward the den. “Freshly caught, might I add.” Ivory’s father Henley boasted. Ivory just grinned up at him before following her mother to the densite. Graizer and Sylvia sat up, tails wagging in excitement over the fresh prey. Ivory bounded over as they swiftly ate up the rabbit.“No “thanks” for your old father?” Henley whined. Licking her lips Sylvia yapped a “Thanks!” Before running over to greet her father, Graizer right behind, they both leapt up to lick his face. Henley laid down and let the kits crawl on him. “Let's play a game!” Yapped Sylvia. Grazier’s tail wagged “Let's play Rabbit!” he suggested. “Okay, but I always play the rabbit,” groaned Sylvia. “Graizer can you be the rabbit?”“Nooo, I don’t want to!” Whined Graizer. “Can’t father be the rabbit?” He looked up to Henley.“Oh, well I…” Henley began before getting cut off. “GREAT! You'll be the rabbit” Barked Sylvia. “You go and hide and then we'll try to hunt you!” The two kits scurried away before Henley could say anymore.Rosaline looked at her partner. “You better go hide, you rabbit,” she joked. “I’m going I’m going,” Henley sighed as he dove into a bush. “Are you ready?” Sylvia called. “He’s ready.” Rosaline answered. The kits began to sniff around the clearing, Graizer went up to Ivory and sniffed her, Ivory giggled. “He’s not over here silly!” Ivory yipped. “Sorry,” Graizer went on.“Graizer, here.” Sylvia whispered. The two kits crouched down and began to slowly stalk toward a bush. The kits weren't the best of stalkers, for they seemed to be stepping on every possible thing that made a sound. Suddenly Graizer leapt into the bush and Henley came running out. Ivory began to giggle obnoxiously as her father was being chased around by her littermates. “GOTCHA!” Graizer howled victoriously, grasping onto Henley’s tail. “Great catch!” Rosaline praised her son. “But I think that's enough of “Rabbit” for today.”“Awwww” Sylvia and Graizer pouted. “I agree with your mother,” Henley sighed, catching his breath. “How about I tell you about my day with the Sun Guardians?”The three kits yipped excitedly, wagging their tails.“Did you fight off any mean Foxes of Oneself?” Sylvia asked eagerly. “No, there was no fighting,” Henley answered. The kits gave him a look of disappointment. “Then what did you do?” pipped Graizer.“I went on a patrol led by Guardian Fallingrain to investigate where rogue foxes of oneself have been spotted.” Henley started. “We sniffed around the tree row and sure enough there was fox scent, and it sure wasn't a fox of Sol, nor Luna. It was spotted near the border of Foxes of Sol, heading into the Forest Between. We followed the scent and it seemed as if these foxes were just hunting and wandered too far into our territory and then headed back. But Aster thinks differently.”Graizer thought for a second before asking “What did Aster think they were doing?”“I'll tell ya what she thought-'' Sylvia walked around to her brother, “-she thinks they were looking for little kits like US!” Syvlia howled, jumping at Grazier in an attempt to scare him, but she only scared Ivory. “OH NO! MAMA SAVE ME!” Ivory scurried to her mother, hiding under her. Henley sighed, shaking his head, “Sylvia, don't scare your sister like that, it's not nice.” Sylvia just grumbled in response. “You kits can play for a bit,” said Rosaline, “me and Ivory will be in the den.” Rosaline made her way to the den followed by Ivory. The two kits began to play around with old bones, tossing them back and forth to each other. Grazier got bored of the bones and went over to his father and asked “Did Aster really think the foxes of oneself were looking for kits? Or did Sylvia just make that up?”At this point Sylvia noticed Graizer left the game so she went after him. “Graizer are you done playing?” She asked him before her father answered.“Yes, Sylvia didn't just make it up,” Henley breathed,“ Aster really believes that's what they were doing.”The two kits' eyes widened, so there really are foxes out there who would want to attack a young kit., Thank you for reading! Please don’t be afraid to comment What you liked, didn’t, don’t understand, etc..caught any typos?
