Being Italian, and well...pretty much Venetian...the Carnival that happens in Venice every year always gave me such a strange feeling. A good one, but still...kind of mysterious. As a kid, I'd always see tons of masks for sale in Venice and this one, the Plague Doctor's, always made me feel uneasy, but at the same time I was always intrigued by it. I think it was because it stood out so much from the other decorative masks.Either way, I finally decided to do some doodles of the Doctor.

Ahhh.... Venice. Been there, got the mask. The mask was supposed to be a medieval gas mask, and the uniform was the primitive hazmat suit.
It didn't really work, though...

The costume looks cool. Even though the only difference is the Carnival ones have a ruff and don't carry snake heads, Mercury and pigeon blood.

Those were actually early gas masks, and the beak was usually filled with vinegar, sweet oils and/or with other strong-smelling things like lavender, mint, camphor or dried roses to mask the stench of death and unburied bides.

Plague doctors definitely had one of the most recognisable masks in history.
