Description

People have been asking me about a G8 version of the Knocked Out set, so I went ahead and did one.  Now in testing at Daz3d.  Rendered in Daz Studio 4.11 with Iray, postwork for  compositing canvases (sparks are in-engine from my own confetti product).

I think this one has a more interesting story to it than the original's main promo.  Not that a one-figure scene can't have a story, joelegecko is a master of this, but it's nice to have a GTX 1080 and be able to render a scene with a full prop set and more than two figures in a reasonable amount of time.

Might I make a suggestion.  The tail puff on the dart is a bit too "bushy" It would cause the dart to slow way too quickly once it left the muzzle of the pistol.  You might try a taller, narrower version.

The dart's appearance is deliberate.  There is a realistic tranquilizer dart in the set (realistic in the sense that it looks just like animal darts with their impact/membrane system; there are no human tranquilizer darts IRL).  There's a realistic blow dart, too; they're shown in the other promos.  This is a "movie" or "cinematic" dart.  It's not meant to resemble anything that would ever work in terms of physics.  It does have a morph to fold the poofy end smaller, but in general its purpose is to be as visible as possible in a scene, not to be realistic.

How long did this scene take to render?

...I really need a new GPU, I'm still on a 970

I render main promos at 2000x2600 so I can have a large version for dA. That being the case the final acceptable version of it took I want to say around 2 hours. At 1000x1300 typically I can get final render time in under a half hour on most scenes. Both times exclude composition and fiddling.

Yeah I could be looking at 8+ hours with the 970
Considering getting a 1070 in the not too distant future, and then a 1080 later - I've read that Iray will happily use two different cards as long as the scene fits in the memory of both

Not exactly.  It makes significantly less use of the second card, and the whole scene has to fit in the memory of whichever card is larger.  Taking out my GTX 980 from the system slows down render, but not nearly as much as not having the 1080.  If your budget is limited, it would be better to save up and just get the 1080 if you can, and then maybe hang onto the 970 to run your monitor if you still have the physical space.

Took your advice - I'm now running the 1080 and the 970. Render times are down by 66%. Definite gamechanger!

Your work is always appreciated. What I like most is the customization options. I never thought I would have to think about whether I wanted a more "primitive" style dart, or a "movie" style one. But that's a dilemma I'm happy to have And don't get me started on the shaping options, love them.

I'm curious what your thoughts are on different styles. Maybe a gas pellet launcher that shoots incapacitating gas grenades? I'd buy it, haha. Though, I suppose you already have smoke products that can imitate stuff like that.

SickleYield In reply to Zomgzilla [2018-07-11 07:57:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, smoke products. Mostly having a pellet launcher involves too many pieces and steps to be reasonable (gun, pellet, broken pellet or grenade, smoke cloud).

A breaking grenade with a plume of smoke would be so nice. Hard to think of other campy spy knockout methods, but I'm sure they're out there.

Daz made me take out the syringe, injection gun, and chloroform/rag (I offered that one as a freebie) from the original set. I keep meaning to do something with the injection bits free or at Rendo, I just never got to it. I refuse to do coshes or other blunts because, while the typical cinematic use of anesthesia is dangerously unrealistic (my injection and chloro gear had amusing disclaimers in small print on their labels), the idea of head trauma as a sedation method is even worse and I can't condone that representation.

Zomgzilla In reply to SickleYield [2018-07-11 08:27:21 +0000 UTC]

That's fair. I liked the idea of a cracking gas grenade as an action prop, would be lovely. Doesn't have to hit anyone's head if that's what you mean. Can have a scene where it hits the spy's chest, a look a confusion, the break and emission, then the KO.

Otherwise, head trauma is more than doable if you want it already, so there's no need to make that anyway. I like the cool effects your products have.

Your avatar makes me think of a giant spider that sedates it's victim's through bites. Maybe a spider gun? Haha, how horrifying.

Edit: Oh I know what you mean. I'm pretty sure there's blackjacks and stuff like that already anyway, otherwise like I said, that's understandable.

SickleYield In reply to Zomgzilla [2018-07-11 18:00:02 +0000 UTC]

I am a big fan of venomous bites, in fact.   But the avatar is that because I love spiders in general separate from my interest in peril scenarios.

I'll look at how difficult the gas grenade thing would be.  Maybe I could combine it with some flashbang effects and make an overall grenades set or something.

I'd buy a grenades set. I need a net-grenade for a project I'm working on, actually. (Also known as - "Take my money, please!!")

I love your Knocked Out! poses for Genesis 3. They are useful and so many combinations.  Plus all the props are fun to play with
