Description
The orange from the sky faded quickly, faster than Noki had anticipated. Her paws thumped over the dirt. She wasn't sure how long she had spent wandering, or exactly how far she had went, but at some point she had lost track of the Nook. Mother Alma would be furious with her, and she shuddered at the thought. More importantly, the woods closed in on her and she felt the distinct chill of rain coming. Except, it didn't seem to be just rain. The clouds blanketed over thickly, and she'd never seen them so bunched before.

She could still make out the faint outlines of the rocks and trees around her, though soon enough they would also fade--and then she would truly be in trouble. There probably wouldn't exactly be danger this close to the other wyngrew. Or might there be?

"Oh, where in Chii am I?" Noki figured she could swear just a little bit, now that Mother Alma wasn't around. Sniffing down some faint footprints, she followed them until a wider path came into view, and she perked up. This must be the way home! Smart wyngrew kept to the paths, of course. She glanced up at the sky, until a distant rumble made the soft fuzz on her rump stand on end. She had never heard anything like that before! It was as if the sky had dropped something down a set of sky stairs.

Again, the thunder rolled, and Noki gasped, looking up curiously. What caused it? What was it? She would ask when she got back... if she got back. Perhaps Koshari would know, he was the smart one with all the interest in magic. Noki paused in her step. Where was Koko? Was he safe?

Her pace quickened with worry. If he was outside, he would definitely be scared of whatever it was. Her eyes peeked at the sky as she turned into a run down the path, her breath coming out in soft pants. On the third pant, she felt it--the rain coming down on her back and cooling the earth around her. The dirt softly dipped beneath her paws before long, and as much as she'd love to feel the soil squish between her toes, the phenomena in the sky seemed dangerous and she didn't want to stick around for long. And Koshari lingered on her mind.

The darkness was impairing her vision, with not much to go on besides the feeling beneath her feet. Noki took a ragged breath--she didn't exactly feel fear. She didn't know it. It was just a disorienting feeling, unable to see where to go next. She came across a fallen log and slowly put her claws on it. It wasn't too large, so she put her other claw on it and hoisted herself over.

As she did, the light was blinding--all the trees around her illuminated and her path lit before her. As quickly as the light came, it vanished. Before Noki could even fathom the strange sky light, the earth shook and the air vibrated violently, to say nothing of the calamitous boom.

Noki's alarmed squeak was drowned out by the booming thunder, right overhead, and she scrambled over the log and booked it down the path she saw just moments ago. The fork of light that licked the sky--amazing! The sound! The rain! She panted as she ran, seeing the lights of home in the distance, but a smile broke out on her small face and she laughed. How wondrous nature was! For a wyngling like Noki, with no parents to call her own, she envied the sources of knowledge other wynglings had with their guardians. But there was a certain charm in discovering things by herself, and she intended to do just that.

Alma stood by the doorway of the Nook as Noki approached, looking much like she's halfway between a heart attack and ready to split the Nook in half with anger. Noki supposed she would have to do the discovering thing after she wasn't grounded. (674 words)
