Misty is 12 in the Manga and James is 17 in the anime, relying on that you have a 5 year age gap.
That's the same age gap between the Sailor Moon couple Molly and Nephrite - age 14 and 19.
But regardless of their ages, this is just fanart of cartoon characters - it's only silly to get upset about.

They did have great chemistry when they had to interact in the show one-on-one. The episode where Ash and Jessie get paralyzed from Vileplume's Stun Spore is another great one.
