Description This is actually a painting that I redid of an original that my father got from Cuba. I decided to redo it because I was inspired with the colors and depiction of the realism. If you want to know more, you know where to reach me!! Thanks to ~prototype-x for taking the pic.

i guess i'd like it more if you made up the entire thing. . . .but otherwise the fact that you could recreate it and add stuff is really talented of you at least.

well, this was when i started painting. i try not to directly copy anymore, but i dunno, just like it so much more, makes it easy for me. lol and plus, a lot of the time that i come up with my own stuff it's horrible.

I like your Painting of the Buildings, tha portray Cuban life. Yout use of color here is very cheering, but the ackward structure of the buildings, coupled with the, monocomatic blues in the back, brings out the dispair in your communication.

I like this - it's good to see some original art on DA for a change - nice, colourful and inspired. Give yourself a coconut!

(the comments seem to have gone a bit political on this page. I have to say I agree with the artist. Some of my friends have been to cuba and they said it was pretty horrible. A nice country, but a bit... well. I'll stop now)

This is really cool! I don't think a building can actually stand like that though, but that is the cool thing about art, you can do WHATEVER you want! Sometimes art is mas mejor que la realidad. Nice job as always, --Erik

thanks so much. alright, well before i say anything, i have to say that my parents were born in cuba and so i've heard my share of stories about life there. so, when i redid this painting and was thinking of a name, i realized, wow - this looks a lot like what my parents described and what they said life was like there; garbage on the floor, toppling houses, and cracks in the buildings. also, the sign that's on the balcony reads: "permuto 1x1." because people in cuba cannot sell their houses on the open market because it's a communist nation, people must "swap" houses. that sign basically means "exchange: 1 for 1" they would put up those signs if they wanted to trade houses and someone would come and move. so, that's why i named it that. i didn't have time to write this all when i submitted the piece and never got around to editing the comments so i'm glad someone asked me. at least i was forced to respond. thanks!

i dont know the situation your parents were put in or why they came here or even when nor is it my biz pero ive heard my share of horror stories of cuba and ive also heard that alot of those stories are lies i heard that the poor where basically in economic and social hell without any representation in govt. i know for a fact fidel is from a well off family and he shot people twice only one of which he served time for and that was very little because he was rich i dunno i have alot of tight consortes de cuba and we build on this alot thats y i ask peace

ay-ay-ay.... whatever. let's just leave this because you have no idea what life in cuba is unless you've lived there. and you have to have lived there with lots of money to do well. i think that you are under the false apprehension that life in cuba is ok. no, it's not. in order for you to succeed in cuba, you better have a lot of money and be well off. u now that the average cuban works for only a few cents every week?!? apparently not. i'm not going to get into it all though because i have a feeling that this would just turn into an arguement. tight consortes, huh? heh - interesting. i won't say any more then. this is funny - a person who.... nevermind. forget it. i was going to start arguing, but screw it. it's not worth trying to convince people of something that they will never come to grips with.

funny because u wanna argue yet you have never lived in cuba either also that you would get so emotional tells me alot about you i mean not only that your weak but you whine if cuba is soo bad go back and fix it or shut up do u duty to your country or shut the fuck up dont start an argument you wont win u donot have the brain power nor the strength to get into it with me also it was a question not a debate grow the fuck up novice

SiempreYo In reply to freedomforfree [2004-05-03 23:21:04 +0000 UTC]

wow.... that just goes to prove that you have no brain. if someone who would curse at another person that they do not even know, then who knows what they would do to someone they do know. interesting. why would i want to go back to cuba when there is nothing that i can do about it? if i went there, i would be jailed and killed if i even tried to start a rebellion. but if i come here and make a piece that shows how i feel about it (recreation of a Cuban artist's piece nonetheless - as the comment says), then i would be informing others of life there.

novice? no, no, no. you're talking to the wrong person here. if you actually knew me you'd know that i was a very strong person and i never let up. but then again, i was in no mood to start an argument with someone whom i didn't even know. and i even said that i did not want to argue. i clearly stated that in my comment.

and by the way, i was not whining. to whining is to make a tone; or as dictionary.com tells us: to utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint. you could not hear me, therefore you could not have possibly known that i was whining. though i was not.

if you'd like to continue this, be my guest. but thank you for your comment and everyone has their own opinions.

what?! since when did this be a question of if i spoke spanish or if i was rich? not that it's your business, but as a matter of fact, my family was completely poor in cuba and went days sometimes without eating. they didn't have anything and when they did they would savor it. my family has struggled all of our lives and when they came from cuba they lived in newark, nj living on cents until they moved when they had me. so we are not the "rich disgusting pigs" that you talk about. "spic or degenerate spaniard"? i'm not even completely sure what those mean because i've never be called anything like that.

my last name is not shortened: it is still Alonso. i love being cuban and i embrace my heritage. my parents actually think that i speak too much about it. i think everyone should embrace their background/ethnicity and since i am cuban, i am damn proud of it.

y que mas? o si - hablo espanol... no es mi primer lengua, pero si hablo y obviamente no has visto mi galeria. escribi un poema en espanol que puse ahi.

and i know other cubans by the way. many who lived there, not only my parents. i've heard their stories as well, gotten background info (book/online reasearch) and have also listened to things my teachers say. i am not out of my league at all. i'm fine with continuing this, but seeing as how upset u've been getting and how you are cursing at me and judging me without knowing me, i'm not sure if it's a good idea.

if u want to leave it, ok. if you don't, ok. i don't think having tension on DA is a good idea though. i'm cuban and have my opinions. you're hispanic and have yours. thank you for your comments even though i may not agree with them. you have your right of speech and i respect you. have a good night.

funny how the high and mighty cubans always refer to themselves as cubans and everyone else latino as hispano the euro-centricos and the HIGH-SPANICS always do that ie. noy soy latina soy cubana you know what im talking about
you know peolple like yourself
and as far as you and ya family living in newark on pennies thta shows me how you lie because you cant live in newark on pennies
i lived in newark for a year on grove street i even went to irvington HS before going back to brooklyn the hispanic part were all the latino's live i dont expect someone like you to understand by the way you was outta ya league when ya gave me that bullshit answer and im not cursing at you(intelligence of a simeon)i cursing while i type i understand if you cannot distinguish the two basically in lay terms you have brought your G.E.D. to a game of brain chess you donot understand its chinese math complex with many variations of your intellectual demise you are weak but its not your fault you were made to be that way you are a victim and i didnt say you are rich i said your family was probably rich in cuba ( bought there way onto a plane after the great revolucion) or umm maybe they were sent here by fidel in the 80's when he discarded the worst the island had to offer? whats fucking funny is you think im angry and that this occupies my day and i lose sleep or something but you are funny to read i think your cute
as far as spanish i could copy any number of prose in german spanish french etc. doesnt mean i speak those languages also youve read book yay do u beleive everything you read nena?(sacrificial lamb led to mental slaughter) you listen to your teachers huh lol
the people who couldnt make it in the real world most of whom are complete incompetents (takes alot to be a teacher u gotta get that liberal arts degree or you can even sub if you have an AA) are you kidding is that the best rebuttal u could muster baby maybe im looking for a life on the wrong planet here well if your perverbial panties are not bunched up too tight and you wanna keep chatting then go to dictionary.com and thesaurus.com you might wanna check if they have a book a yellow one intelligence for dummies this should help
