You are right. The nice patterns in the out of focus parts of the image are called bokeh. This is the Wikipedia article on the subject.

Sure . I used a yellow, a green and an orange piece of plastic (each piece about as large a my hand) and put them behind a bush of erica. The warm colors are from the plastic pieces. The nice bokeh is from the out of focus blossoms of the erica. The flower itself wasn't yet planted and I held it up in front of the camera.
