Description Here's a yarn tail I just spent the last several weeks working on!

Not a terribly difficult process, but very time consuming, especially because I didn't really know what I was doing. xD But it made a very good project to keep me busy over winter break. I even got my sister and a friend to make some with me.

I haven't gotten pictures of the tail being worn yet. It's about knee-length on me. It was actually quite a bit too long at first, and it took me a while to realize it! I was already done, and had just finished making numerous little tweaks and adjustments. I was finally happy and was taking a final look and said "Hey, that's awfully long. Well darn."

I spent all day trying to convince myself that it looked fiiiine, that I didn't need to worry, and that there was nothing to do to fix it anyway.

But eventually I decided to try to fix it. That was scary. I had to cut into the braided-yarn center, risking unraveling of the whole tail.

It took hours, but the length is way better, and actually, the whole tip of the tail was way better. More pics to follow eventually, and I'll get some links up to pictures of the other tails when I post again.

This is all yarn. Braided yarn center, with bundles of brushed and ironed yarn making up individual tufts of fur (you can imagine why this takes so long). The movement is nice and springy when I walk and the fur is very soft. It's nice to have my very own tail that didn't belong to any animals beforehand. xD It feels really nice to wear and is very light. There is black, tan (with a strand or two of darker tan), white, and three shades of grey in here!

Here's a picture of the underside - [link] The white extends a bit longer than I'd intended, but it looks pretty okay. There is some tan near the tip of the tail, too, as well as, as you can see in the first pic, a dark dorsal scent spot.

Made using Bir's method. If you're interested in having one of these yourself, you should see about commissioning her and Skahlly - [link]

Depends a lot on the brand of yarn you're using; using 100% acrylic yarn probably helps as well, and taking your time brushing gently and flat-ironing until each tuft is very smooth.

This is beautiful :3 I'm trying to learn making them myself XD I can't ever find the right yarn to use though :/

Aww, thanks!

I used a Hobby Lobby brand called "I Love this Yarn." Usually 100% acrylic yarns are the best, because they're fairly cheap and tend to brush out nice and smooth. I've heard you can also use wool, but that would be expensive. You definitely want to look out for anything with cotton, because it will make the fur brush out really short.

I hope you can find the right kind! These are a lot of work, but when you find something that works, it's pretty exciting. <3

Ah, wow, I would love to know how to make one of these. It turned out just gorgeous! I need to make a tail and a mane-hat-headdress-thing for myself, and I'm thinking this technique would work well for both. Though it sounds time consuming, it also sounds fun :3

Check out "Morgrim's Wolf's" video on Youtube. I pretty much did it like that, except I sewed on the fur for stability and put a key ring on the base.

I would love to see what you come up with!

Yes, it's very time-consuming and repetitive, but I think the final result is so worth it.

Ah wow, thanks! That does look pretty straightforward. How much time did you end up spending on yours?

Oh gosh, I don't know, I totally lost count. I worked on it on and off for a bit over two weeks. Definitely 20 hours plus, though, I think. I was a little perfectionistic at the end. You might be able to do it in less, but it's definitely time consuming.

Check "Yarn tail" on Youtube. I think that's your best bet. A user called Morgrim's Wolf posted a tutorial video that is somewhat similar to what I did here. He ties the fur on instead of sewing it, though.

I have wanted to make one of those but I dont have the right brush. With the brush I currently have it only makes the fur an inch long.......good for cat tails I guess lol.

Silver-Sundog In reply to Clownfin [2012-01-19 16:14:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, is it the brush or the yarn??
What kind of brush are you using?
Make sure your yarn is not cotton - cotton will always brush out short like that.

I use one of those wire-bristled dog slicker brushes. If I brush very carefully from the tips of the yarn up, it works pretty well. :3

Clownfin In reply to Silver-Sundog [2012-01-21 20:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Well that would explain it. It is cotton yarn =3

Acrylic is good. Brushes out nice and is shiny. You can use wool, too, but that would be kinda pricey. xD I used the Hobby Lobby brand "I Love This Yarn."

You should try to make one! It's very rewarding in the end!

Or you could commission Bir/Skahlly.

They are very fun tails.

I was amazed the first time I saw, too! "Yarn tail" sounds kind of nasty, but then you see this, and it's like waaaat, no way.

It take some time to brush out all the tufts and then iron them before you sew them on, but the result is so neat! I admit I got a little tired of it partway through, but it was so worth it.
