Description This is the Porta Nigra (Latin for 'The Black Gate', perhaps the most prominent landmark in Trier, Germany's oldest city. This city (as the name Porta Nigra implies) dates back to the Roman empire. The Roman army was based here and there are remains of a bath complex, an amphitheater (still used for concerts and dramas), as well as this gate. The gate got its unique name from the soot from thousands of heating and cooking fires built over the centuries.

Hey, I've been there! You have a better pic though. Mine's waaay too close to the gate. I took mine during some festival or something where they recreated Roman battles and stuff. I think I posted a pic of the bath house you mentioned earlier too.

Amazing, considering all the wars that have moved across there over some 2000 years.
