Description
As Isaac walked into the flat his nostrils were assaulted with the smell of dough and burning.
"What the hell?" He quickly hung his jacket on the hook by the door and rushed into the kitchen. When he saw what was happening he had to stop and blink for a second, just to make sure he wasn't really dreaming.
Their tiny kitchen was entirely covered in cookie dough, with blobs of the stuff covering the fridge, the counter, the floor, and just about every visible surface. The counter was also littered with a dozen plates, each with a mound of a variety of cookies and baking products, and to top it all off, Imogen was crouched in front of the open oven, scraping something suspicious out of it. "Learn to bake they said," she muttered furiously, working so hard that her tied back hair was falling into her eyes. "It will be fun they said." She scrubbed for a few more moments before falling back on the ground in defeat.
"What the hell's going on here?" Isaac laughed as he helped her up. He laughed again as he saw that there was dough in her hair too. "Why have you suddenly turned our kitchen into a cookie factory?"
Imogen sighed and brushed her hair out of her eyes. "Well, I wanted to have a surprise for you when you got back from your gig." She looked around the kitchen helplessly and waved her arms. "And then this happened!"
Isaac grinned. "Hey, calm down," he put his hands on her shoulders and looked into her eyes. "Whatever you did, I certainly did get a surprise."
Imogen raised a floury eyebrow. "I meant a nice surprise." She turned away from him and started to pile dishes in to the sink. "What kind of mother will I be if I can't even make cookies?" She tenderly stroked the tiny bump on her belly. "I'm not sure I'm cut out for this."
Isaac tilted his head and looked at her for a moment before walking up behind her and wrapping her in his arms. "I think you'll be a great mother," he whispered in her ear. He covered the hand that was on her belly with his own.
Imogen sighed and leant back into his chest. "You think so?"
"Of course! You'll be the kind of mother that lets us make a mess in the kitchen!"
Imogen giggled. "Us? I don't think I've seen you cook a single thing since we've been living here."
Isaac pretended to act offended. "What do you mean? I cook plenty!"
"Cereal doesn't count."
Isaac raised an eyebrow and withdrew his arms from around her. Startled, she turned around, only to find him with a mischievous expression on his face. His light blue eyes twinkled in a way that made her nervous.
"Isaac…what are you thinking?"
A grin slowly stretched across his face. "We're gonna have a competition."
"Say what?"
Isaac nodded enthusiastically, already getting excited. He bounced slightly on his feet like a little kid. "Yup. Both of us have to make a batch of twelve cookies using only the ingredients in this kitchen. We have only one hour, and sabotage is allowed."
Imogen raised an eyebrow. "You're so weird."
Isaac laughed and ran a hand through his hair. "Yeah, but you love me anyway."
"Heaven knows why."
"Oh please Immy?" He clasped his hands together like he was praying and looked at her with big, round puppy-dog eyes. "It'll be so much fun!"
Imogen couldn't help it, she laughed. "Alright, fine. We'll see how you act when I wipe your cookies in the dust."
Isaac grinned. "Oh, I don't think that will happen."
"We'll see. Should we start now?"
"Fine. 3…2…1…start!"
In a flash they were in motion, slipping and sliding over the dough-covered floor as they rushed to get to the fridge and the pantry. There was a bit of a scuffle as they fought over a carton of eggs, both of them laughing as they wrestled over it. Eventually Isaac won and ran off with them, sticking his tongue out childishly.
Immy grinned wickedly. "Oh, you're gonna pay for that." Isaac didn't hear her, he was too busy mixing cookie mixture in a bowl. Imogen grabbed the flour and looked at it for a moment. She looked at it, and then at Isaac, then looked back at it again. She shrugged. "Well, he did say that sabotage was allowed."
"Surprise!" she yelled as she ran up behind him and dumped the whole bag of flour over his head. Isaac blinked and turned around, a look of shock on his face. His dark hair had turned completely white, as had his skin and his clothes. Everything was quiet for a moment. Then he gave a little cough and Imogen dissolved into giggles, bending over double and clutching her stomach.
"What the hell Immy?!?"
Imogen laughed even harder. His powdery face and skin, his shocked expression and his outburst just made her laugh even harder, and it took a few moments before she could speak.
"I…I couldn't help it…a-and you…y-your f-face…!" was all she managed to say before she dissolved into giggles again, laughing and laughing until tears were running down her cheeks.
"I see…" he said in a dangerous tone.
Before she could move Isaac had cracked two eggs over her head and she gasped as she felt the cold, gooey sensation drip over her skin. "Eww!" she cried, trying to wipe it with her apron. "I-saac!" she whined, looking up at him and seeing the large grin on his face.
"What?" he shrugged his shoulders. "It was only fair."
Imogen smirked and slowly backed away to the counter, keeping her eyes locked on his. "I see. So that's how you want to play it, huh?" She reached behind her and grabbed the icing gun.
Isaac grinned. "Bring it."
Imogen shrugged. "You asked for it," and before Isaac could say anything else she turned the icing gun on him and pulled the trigger, and she watched in amusement as cream squirted from it and into his face. He laughed and spluttered, holding his hands up in mock surrender.
"Okay, okay, you beat me!" he cried, pretending to cower in fear but really just grabbing the bottle of chocolate sauce from the counter.
Imogen pretended to blow smoke off the top of the gun. "Like you could beat me."
"Sike!" Suddenly chocolate sauce was being sprayed into her face and hair and she gasped, turning the gun back on him and shooting. Isaac laughed and ran at her, trying to ignore the cream that was going into his eyes. Imogen screamed and threw cookies at him, but he just kept going. She ran away from him, and for a good ten minutes they just chased each other around the kitchen, throwing flour and eggs and cookies and goodness knows what else, until their kitchen looked like a bakery blew up inside of it.
"Come back here!" Isaac shouted, pelting her with eggs.
"Not on your life!" she called back, scraping chocolate sauce from her apron and throwing it at him. She was out of weapons now and desperately she ran to the fridge to get something, anything, but as soon as she opened the door she was yanked back. Isaac had grabbed her waist from behind and spun her around, both of them laughing like maniacs.
"No…no! Put me down!" she giggled, reaching around and trying to smear her chocolate covered hands in his face.
"No way!" he gasped, spinning even faster and flicking his cream covered hair out of his eyes. His words weren't much of a promise because the next instant he'd slipped on the goo on the floor, and both of them fell to the ground with a bump, still laughing their heads off.
"OI!" A woman's voice yelled from below them. "What the hell is going on up there?!" They both froze, their eyes wide with fright. Isaac had to bite his knuckles to keep from laughing again. Imogen rolled her eyes, but she was having a hard time keeping herself serious too.
"I'm coming up there now, and if a single thing is out of place, I swear I'm kicking you both out!"
Immy and Isaac gulped as they looked around the ruined kitchen. A blob of chocolate fell from the ceiling. "Uh oh…" Isaac murmured.
Imogen turned around and glared at him. Or at least tried to. Her angry look was spoiled by the fact that her mouth was twitching. "This was your idea, Isaac." She whispered harshly.
Isaac laughed nervously and ran a hand through his sticky hair. "Um…sorry?"
Imogen sighed, crossed her arms, and turned her back to him.
"I know!" he crawled over to her. "How about we offer her some cookies?"
"Yeah Isaac, like that'll work."
