Description so i decided to try a more surrealist approach with my 2nd oil painting.. i know it needs work and some bits look just plain wrong. partly its because i need a thinner brush and partly its because im only now learning to paint.
obviously.
comments/faves/etc muchly appreciated, love to all and have a wonderful day!

This one looks good as is. It is what makes it look surreal. I havent done any painting in a very long time. This is very good for just being your second time. Do you ever display your works at art shows/exhibits? This is very good.

thank you so much! im unsure as to how i would go about getting myself an exhibition.. between one thing and another i never got round to figuring out the marketing side of things. deviantart was supposed to my shot at showing the world my art lol i would love to actually get shown publically, do art galleries generally allow artists to show their works?
i was under the impression they only showed work by dead guys...
i know leeds art gallery does a modern artist's room, but its full of "modern art" statues.... so go figure XD
if i could get an exhibition i would love to, but would they take pencil drawings?

I like it,and ofcourse the deeper meaning of it and the details!!! I think you did it nice, maybe I would mix more colors for each item than you get more depth in it and one site of each item more shadow.like the eye and the fish.I wish I know the story behind this painting.......

the place (the rocky outcrops and water, with steps and little pathway going out over water, and the standing stones )... that is something i have seen.

the rest is surrealist touchings....
though i could come up with a more adventurous story if you would prefer

Well, okay, sure it's no Dali, but I love getting lost in weirdness such as this. (Yes, I caught the subtle Dali reference. )

Also Peeping Eye is one of my favorite Castlevania enemies.

On a more metaphysical note, I like what you did with the reflective and refractive properties of water. Surfaces of water were traditionally portals into which one could see the other side; I'd say you worked that angle nicely.

thanks! with this one i was trying to capture a feel of a place, while making it surrealist. these are my first baby steps of the painting world
the eye was from a waking dream i experienced ages ago, it just opened up in a wall. there are a few times it has creeped into my work, i think he is an effective way of making an area of flat terrain look more interesting XD

Few things ever imagined are as creepy and unsettling as a giant eyeball watching you; music videos and that movie the Monkees made have taught me this.

i saw the monkees movie once.... that was some straight up david copperfield shit, with ribbons attached. if you want creepy tv though, have you heard of the hulu adverts? i heard they were banned before they could hit tv. search hulu adverts on youtube, theres four of em. now that IS scary
O.O
there ARE big orange eyes everywhere.... but people forget they are there because we call them CCTV...

I dunno... I tend to avoid ads. (Behold, American laziness! We truncate everything to the fullest extent possible) The first Hulu commercial I did see, however, was fairly bizarre and made me question what the hell I was seeing, which is fairly effective advertising, I guess. Maybe I'll look those up.

Those damn unblinking closed-circuit cameras, watching my every move in a vain effort to keep me properly civil. When the world becomes cyberpunk Ghost in the Shell-world I swear, I will become The Laughing Man.

(...he is a guy who hacks cameras to believe he is invisible with his mind. Pretty much your average cyberpunk misanthrope, really. )

totally, hulu ads- the world is ending andd they are makin it official!
what bullshit.
if only we could hack cameras eh? what a world we could live in, if only our imaginations could be in charge :grumble:

Not too shabby for a 2nd timer ^^ I haven't worked with paint in over a year..I should do that again. One thing about surrealist is you can get away with booboos and no one knows but you! Look forward to more.

Very imaginative work Simon! How can surrealism look wrong? If you are short of brushes, don't forget about all those household items you can use to get effects like sponges, clingfilm, kitchen utensils etc!

lol thanks ann, i guess im too hard on myself. i dont like how the womans face turned out. getting to grips with detail and clarity is difficult... i will start hunting around my house, maybe i can be like the Ateam and put together a crack team of painting implements
i hadnt thought of it.... big for giving me the proverbial kick up the bottom. thanks!

I tried to paint twice... I can't. I like pens and pencils, I like tablet... but brush... it's so hard for me. I don't feel myself in painting on paper or canvas these days.
So I believe in you! You are talented!!!
I'm still drawing. I'm practising... so maaaany sketches! And no one had seen them (: I want to make best and think a lot about drawing, draw everything with my hands in my mind when I'm walking to school or to hosp, when I'm preparing food or cleaning up.

i found out the world doesnt see art as pencils... only paintings and sculptures in art galleries... so i pick up paint brush and scream a great battle cry:
"I WILL LEARN TO PAINT!!!"
we can do anything we put our minds to... i will proove it!!
